What don't you like about him?

I don't think he will be able to dominate and get off the press in the nfl.

Let's be real, you had no clue who he was lol

Do you watch college football at all? Kid played for ole miss how could anyone not have seen him play?

lol you had no clue who he was

I live right north of Ole Miss, they play Memphis nearly every year. This kid is a good player, I have seen it firsthand. He knows how to get open, and he is as fast as advertised.

Nice. Is he similar to Cowing?

.. and Gray..

we just continue to draft these type of WRs year in and year out, and they can't develop because we keep the latest one we drafted.
Can Shanahan please let him play?!
No idea who he was, so can't say much about him.
This time they drafted the wr that made the overrated first round quarterback.

Aiyuk is going to miss some time is my guess.

Robinson and Pearsall as a starting pair is not particularly intimidating.

Jennings, Watkins, Cowing, Owens, Taylor, Gage, Neyor, Hodgins, Bergen

Jennings is good.
Taylor is meh.
Gage was okay 3 years ago but hasn't been able to get on the field since then.
The rest are in a battle for the backup jobs.
Watkins probably was a Receiver that the Niners need ,b/c of aiyuk's questionable availability? and Jennings final year of his contract? Situation .,We suspected that SF would draft a receiver, it was not if ? but what round would SF do it in? .Since Wr's is one of Shanahan's favorite position (Which is common knowledge to niner fans) It's not hard to see why they took J. Watkins

Take,J. Watkins NFL Combine #'s and College Production! #'s and compare them to...( Aiyuk & Jennings) to use as a baseline comparison ,And ,we start to get an idea of what SF maybe sees in him.

In the 40: Jordan Watkins ran a 4.37 (Which is in the high end) compared to Aiyuk's 4.50 (Which is good) and Jauan Jennings 40yd which was 4.72 (Which is pedestrian) compared to Watkins and Aiyuk.

In the Vertical Jump ,Watkins Vertical Jump was a 36.5" jump (Which is pretty good), But Aiyuk Vertical was 40" (Which is a high percentile number) and Jennings was a 29" which is low (But being 6'-3) that doesn't help his jumping ability),(But he still does well in contested throws).

When comparing Production Scores (Which some teams value more than others) "but is a telling # of their past metrics"
Watkins has a Production Score of 65 "which for a 4th rounder is good", And Aiyuk's Production Score of 78 was which is Very good !.
(This Production # is what you would expect from a 1st Round Pick) and Jauan Jennings, Production Score of 65 (which is incidentally the same for Watkins) Which Was a real good number ,especially for Jennings ,being a 7th Round Pick) Which Was an extreme value pick for SF looking back at it ,His (Jennings) Production number metrics ," I would think did not go unnoticed to the Niner's scouting Dept". Which was telling of his future Production!

He is a Deep threat receiver his yards after reception were high. He excels in crossing routes (Works the middle) looks natural running between the hatches Runs post and flag routes as part of his favorite routes.

He is considered a very gifted route runner (even though "Tre Harris" , got drafted in the 2nd Rd and was selected in front of Watkins ,"Ole miss coaches would use Watkins for the more complicated timing routes instead of Harris due to the precision of his routes.

(This is one of Watkins Scouting Reports)

"It epitomized what he does best. Watkins can beat defensive backs over the top with his speed or make a short route into a long gain with this elusive ability.
The 49ers are getting a dependable wide receiver with good hands. Watkins is one of 11 Rebel receivers to ever break 2,000 career yards.

Watkins' blistering speed and agility make him an ideal slot receiver, as Watkins ran a 4.37 40-yard dash at the NFL Combine. "Watkins is known for all speed and big plays".

But most importantly this is what Shanahan said about Watkins "

"Love his speed," Kyle Shanahan said. "First thing you notice when you see a guy for the first time, you look at his 40 time, then you watch his routes at the Combine. I thought he was one of the better route runners at the Combine, just with natural receiver skills and everything.

"You watch his hands, he was our best graded-out guy going through the gauntlet and stuff with just true natural hands. Watched his one-on-ones at the Senior Bowl and then to how he played at Ole Miss, talking to [Mississippi head coach] Lane [Kiffin], the whole package. We love the guy. Think he's got a great skillset and needed to add him to the group."

Shanahan has another Deep Threat! ...Guess in the New Era of Football with free agency and more of the kind of injuries ,that SF, had last year, A team cannot have enough Good Receivers With high end Speed that have Good hands and are a technician in running routes.

This may be hard to figure out but when you have Deebo, Aiyuk and Jennings then Danny Gray doesn't get much playing time.

Deebo is gone. Aiyuk will likely miss some time. Robinson may miss some time if they do the suspension.

You're looking at Jennings, Pearsall and Cowing as the top 3 in all likelihood.

Cowing will have to show that he has the offense down. Any rookie coming in like Watkins will have to do the same.

Danny Gray's issues weren't speed. He kept getting chances and whether it was injuries or something else it just never happened for him. He was drafted in 2022 and released 2 years later. Yet Cowing has 4 more receptions than him already while being targeted 1 time less.

Not every speed WR is the same.

Agree. Cowing has produced. Given what Watkins seems to do well at, I think he could make a big impact early on depending on how well he picks up the offense. I like how wide open it looks right now. No Deebo and Aiyuk means there will be lots of opportunities.
Very fast downfield run blocker.
A lot of beat writers had some good stuff to say about him so far
