It is time for truth between you and I: The 2024 49ers Fear Thread

I live amongst dust, rock and mountains. We fear fire here. Much like a child fears an evil spirit or ghost or weirdly shaped creature from their favorite show. Yet, many believe, especially those crazy motherf**kers in the Black Rock Desert, that fire cleanses (and weirdly also can pitch fashion designs. But I digress.). Indeed, high heat has a purifying effect, while it can also help cauterize wounds--though, the later part leaves scars. Here a reminder. I would not bathe in fire physically, it tends to burn. But what about metaphysically? Can fire purify the mind? The soul? The fandom of a scarred individual? I mean specifically the burning away of fears.

It is time for truth between you and I. It is time to face our fears about this season.

I hate losing. Most people do. It is the reminder that not all is fair, just (in the eye of the beholder)and that not all succeed. As I have aged, I deal with it better because I realize that my life outside of my fandom is far more important. I suspect yours is too. Yet, with the new season, with the Chiefs winning in a fashion, once again against the Ravens to start the season, that is absolute bull s**t and luck, the now familiar fear returns. The fear that the Niners are going to f**k this up.

As an aside, we have a lot more to be f**king scared about. Look around, when was the last time you spoke to that person with differing political opinions than your own? How about that family member? You know outside of a family gathering where you had to awkwardly talk to them. When was the last time you spoke to Xbox guy 37910, who you cut off because, well, he was an Xbox guy, and you are a Sony man?
These and many other issues are pressing these days: issues of race, gender, and sexual discrimination; people making videos of a political nature that were backed by the Kremlin, and were surprised to find out that the mulah came from, I dunno, the Kremlin; the banning of f**king books in a democracy (truth be told, a hallmark of one if you study the history of democratic states--contradictory, I know.); attacking librarians (really?); the growth of global poverty; add in inflation that is making it hard to live where you might, that is if you are lucky to own a home; the concentration of wealth amongst the few, while the majority of our world are poor; another school shooting that scares you to your core as you send your Deebo loving child off to school (It is true, my daughter loves her some Deebo. If we ever let him go, holy hell it could be bad.); a continuing war in the middle east that has even the most ardent of supporters of a side saying, "enough"; and the reality that the Game of Thrones prequel show will never be great again (See what I did there?).

Simply, we have much more pressing s**t to deal with. Right? What the f**k was I thinking? I am out.

Wait. You are still here? So, you too are alarmed about the state of the team and its future. Because you have the same fear as I. A fear that I never knew in my childhood, but that I, we, were meant to face.

More than anything, I am afraid that our season will end again in disappointment and that we all wasted our time waiting for something to happen that fewer and fewer of us remember. I mean, It has been almost thirty years, dog. It has been a minute. Since 1995, we have found spectacular ways to lose games, in particular, Super Bowls. We have lamented the luck or calls received by others that defeated us. Had we gone back in time, though, I suspect if we investigate other fan bases, they, too, would have held the same fear of disappointment as their team, once again, lost to the 49ers during the 1980s and 90s.

Is it the loss of time? I mean a lot of time goes into the process of preparing for a season, going through the ebb and flows, and then dealing with whatever the results were. Then comes the healing, the aforementioned scarring of wounds that we have cauterized in some fashion or another, and the hopeful renewal of the forthcoming season.

Nah, I don't think so. I think this is about control. The fear that we cannot control the outcome. That we are, lucky socks, hats, and other unmentionable items speaking, not in control of what happens. We are along for the ride. So, why fear it, why lay it out there?

Because we still try to control it. With our witty denial that we care. Or are self-effacing humor at ourselves over our fandom. We are trying to own the image we project about the whole f**king thing. Those posters, for instance, who have spent a lifetime lamenting the team because they knew better. The posters that respond to them because, well, they feel like the other posters are just haters. And, let's not forget about that a*****e that spent the better part of twenty years of his life telling stories or trying to make sense of it all, when he, of all people, had better s**t to do, but loved cheering for the Niners so much that he did it anyway.

All that said, let's burn those fears, here and now.

I have laid my fear for the season out. So whatcha got?

Personally, win or loose I am cool....my fear is regression that delays or derails the progress of our younger core. We can loose a ton of different ways and it not be a long term negative indicator....but my fear would be more along the lines of Bosa spending much of the season not getting home, or Brock stacking up high interception games. I am like 90% sure they are who the majority think they are, but even the best have hiccups....

The 49ers only broke my heart one time, that was when my "Favorite 49er Of All Time" fumbled against the Giants...stuff happens....I think that changed me...so didn't even get really shook up when the 49er had to overcome Dallas. It was what it was, I complained a ton during the Nolan years, but still was not heart broken...We the fans would survive Bosa or Brock (or whomever ) regressing, but it could cost us a fella I think is a franchise level coach. I don't want to see that happen, because I think a coaching change puts us into a period of rebuilding around another coach after they make a change.

I am afraid of loud noises and the dark but mostly I am terrified of Jimmy g finding his way back to the 49ers. Mortified actually.

I believe in Grant Cohn. I think management has sent the message loud and clear to Kyle this year. They've invested a LOT of money on a veteran team that has some aging talent. It's put up or shut up. If Kyle can't win a SB with the current roster in this window (probably the last year in this window), he either needs to go or at least given a one year leash. He's a horrible head coach.

something to look forward to at least…

You believe in Grant Cohn. I stopped reading right there, that pretty much shows me/us how ignorant you are.

I don't know how all the political stuff fits in with the 49ers....

Yeah the 49ers under the Yorks and Shanahan find ways to lose NFC Championship and Super Bowl multiple times each.

Kremlin. LOL. There is a small country in the middle east people think they are supposed to worship. So they go to heaven. Hundreds of millions and billions of influence come from there on a regular basis over time. Never seen anybody have a problem with it or a DOJ indictment. They have more influence times a million than Russia. It's not even close.

I fear that DrEll is Grant Cohn's father and it haunts us daily.

Thats some scary s**t.
The truth is winning the Super Bowl this season will be more difficult than last season.

Doesn't mean it's impossible or can't be done. Just that it'll be more difficult.

Also, people bring up 2021-2023 quite a bit but I still think 2019 was our best shot. That team was hoeing and humming from the beginning of September to the final 7 minutes of the Super Bowl. Last season we struggled all playoffs.

Injuries made the struggle, but consistency is difficult

I just wish Kinlaw would have given us a good bye gift and b***h slapped Cohn just one more time.
Whelp. It is getting a bit scary.
