Two big hires in San Francisco: the 49ers plan to hire their defensive passing game specialist Nick Sorensen as their new defensive coordinator, and former Chargers HC Brandon Staley for a prominent staff role, possibly assistant head coach, sources tell me and @JFowlerESPN. pic.twitter.com/hbV4ykACkI

New 49ers defensive coordinator Nick Sorensen joined San Francisco's staff in 2022 as a defensive assistant. He was promoted to defensive passing game specialist/nickel backs last year. Not the move I would've made, would've gone with Merritt but I have no issue here. I hope they see something big with Sorensen since he was moved up very quickly since getting here just a couple of years ago. Bringing in Staley to assist without giving him the job is very smart too. People hate on him but he's a smart guy, just a bad HC.
Always said I would let results to speak for themselves but my initial thought was this was a solid move even if I would've preferred bringing in Merritt.

Kyle's always been fascinated with Fangio's scheme. Our players get a familiar face and run the bases of our regular D and we get to add some fresh ideas. I'll take it. Glad Staley isn't the DC.

Would have been cool, I just didn't think it was realistic. Sorensen was the guy I expected them to hire since the beginning.
I think this way we get our 4-3 Seattle scheme and can toss in some wrinkles of that Fangio scheme. We will see

It was reported that Sorensen and Kyle were the guys game planning the defense for the SB (not Wilks).
