Hasty has good hands and is excellent at blitz pickup. I would like to see Mason get some reps in those situations.

Same. I read all through camp that he had the best hands of all of them

Who? Hasty or Mason?

Mason. I want to see him get some reps in those situations

Gotcha! Maybe they don't want to put too much on film because they plan on stashing him away on the practice squad.

"they plan on stashing him away on the practice squad"

What, for all of a "New York Minute" !?
There's gotta' be a few RB needy teams, or a few teams wishing to upgrade that position

If Kyle tries to hide Mason on the PS, Pete Carroll will snatch him faster than he chews gum on game day

Sure. There is tape of Mason as a runner. There is no tape on him as a pass catcher or blitz pickup though. Hasty has taken those snaps late in games after they had inserted Mason into the game. Mason has only played the last 8 minutes or less in both games so far. Not to mention, he has already gone under the radar since he went undrafted. Nothing is a sure thing but I would say its pretty safe and Kyle Shanahan has sort of hidden him anyway.
I watched some of his GT videos. As a runner, if he doesn't make you miss, at 6'1" and 220#+, he will run over or through tackles. He should definitely make the squad. And PLEEEZE don't let Sneaky Pete get his hands on him 😎

I think Sermon is gonna get cut. Sad for a 2nd year 3rd round pick.

Which is so mind boggling that we drafted that position so high. No more RBs until day 3 of the draft from now on. With so much success we've had with late picks and UDFA you would think this regime would be smarter than that.

My pet conspiracy theory is that Anthony Lynn was campaigning for TDP. Then again, Trey Sermon was drafted last year and Anthony Lynn wasn't here yet.

Their reaches have fallen from rounds 1 and 2 (Thomas, Pettis) to round 3. Better than 2017 but not quite where we need to be in terms to risky picks.

To be fair, the draft is hit and Miss. Even Walsh picked some busts. The saving grace is that they still manage to land some gems in the late rounds and in the undrafted group. Thats good enough for me.

Having said that, in hindsight, I'd have loved the Pettis and Solomon picks back for a redraft, for sure.

This guy is probably our best back right now.

I'm not here to argue or dispel other posters' beliefs … and yes, he's an UDFA - so you're correct in that there's no recent NFL tape on him.
However, Phoenix49er - the OG poster of this thread - left an example in Post #1 of his willingness to block in PassPro

How relevant that becomes remains to be seen in short order, seeing that Houston will be his last chance before the final cutdown date
which is 30 August

I believe if he's placed on the PS, there will be a team amongst the other 31 that will take a chance on him, and that is what I was expressing.
We've already seen this happen with other players the FO has tried to hide, during their tenure since 2017. This is not an attempt to rag on
our FO (which I like), it's just the nature of the NFL
We haven't seen him run vs other defenses or how well he blocks but there is no denying the talent and speed he has. Every run no hesitstion just hits the hole quickly. On a lot of his runs he falls forward for a extra yard. I would feel more confident saying this if i saw him with the starters but i seen enough to know he has to be on the 53 and have a role on this team.

You get the entire point of the common era draft it looks like. Take some chances here there and make more than you miss.

Ah no but I put him on the roster over Sermon all day long.
Looking good vs 2nd and 3rd stringers in preseason doesn't mean too much, it happens all the time.. It's better than not looking good but time will tell if he is kept on the 53 and actually produce vs NFL starters. He has at least 3 other RBs ahead of him even if he makes 53 to even get opportunities to show really if he is good enough to start in the regular season.. He's RB insurance at this point in case of injuries like previous seasons.

No. Mitchell is the #1 and should be. Mason is pretty similar to Jeff Wilson imo.

if this is a issue. i would rather take a chance on this kid than sermon who we are seeing what he does not have... the o line was not good for sermon but hasty and mason had the same line or worse. they control what they can control. sermon acts scared

That's playing. And you have to consider the preseason is mostly scrub city. How Mason is doing in practice against the 49er defense probably means more to Kyle.

Yeah, but Mitchell is not 100% right now. Mason should get starting reps along with Mitchell, IMO.

Mason is running against future sales reps. Mitchell just ran for the most rushing yards in 49er history.
