He timed it perfectly, no way he goes anywhere near this high with more exposure. Unfortunately for us….our FO is the one who took the bait

It could be worse, they could have drafted mediocre Mac.

Trey is a high ceiling pick.

I agree but you have to admit he's a risk. I think it's one that was worth taking but my job isn't on the line. If Jimmy's salary wa slower and he could stay healthy all year then they might not have taken the risk. On the other hand they might have done it anyway if they feel that Jimmy is as good as he'll ever be and they needed someone better to be a consistent threat. Jimmy is fine when the team is playing well and Kyle's system is working. When the running game starts to falter and the short passing game isn't yielding all that YAC then they're in trouble. Jimmy hasn't shown he can attack downfield on a consistent basis and we know he's not going to scare defenses with his legs.
We have all seen the lows (bad mechanics leading to stuff like the wtf pass to Kittles feet v AZ) as well as the highs (his first pre season bomb to Sherfield off PA).

Bill Walsh believed in judging players based on their best film.

Walsh said it was his job as a coach to create situations for the player to shine and be more consistent.

KS rolled the dice on Lance for off the charts athleticism and smarts and his job is to get Trey Lance to produce consistently.

Give it more than 1 week before you pass judgment.

The move to draft Lance was a chance at becoming a rare super power team if it pays off.

I would rather be super bowl or bust than a perennial 7-9 type team.

You miss 100% of the shots you don't take.

Trey is a high ceiling pick.

Mac + picks is likely a better situation than Trey - picks

Trey literally has to be a franchise altering QB to justify the assets that were used to acquire him. If he turns out to be even just "good", then it was a bad pick because we have "good" now, and would have had "good" at spot 12, and been able to keep our picks.
The definition of irony:

Kyle trading up to draft Lance because Jimmy cant stay healthy, then Kyle called a bunch of runs for Lance against AZ, increasing his chances of getting hurt.

Which he did.

And the runs were because he has so little overall QB experience, yet that seemed to make Lance a viable backup this year. Instead of a seasoned QB, with Lance as the 3rd QB (like Love in GB last year).

We're all tracking with this, right?

Hang in there, Trey - get healthy, we're going to need you later this year.

I think the criticism of Trey is almost laughable. Does he have some things to work on? Sure he does, but expecting him to look great when he's only played one game in almost 2 years is a joke. He was the least experienced QB in this draft but Kyle took him based on the potential he sees. Maybe that won't work out but we at least have to give him every opportunity to learn and then show what he can do. Look at all the chances and excuses that have been made for Jimmy who was far more experienced when he was traded to the Niners. We kept hearing he just needs more reps. He needs better receivers. He needs a better O line. I think we at least need to give Trey the same time to develop that we gave Jimmy. In 3-4 years he'll still be 5 years younger than Jimmy is now.

Look at the QBs from the last draft. They're all starting for bad teams that didn't have a decent QB. None of them are setting the league on fire and they all had much more experience. Trevor Lawrence is finally starting to show a little of what he can do but he was a 4 year starter from a major college. He's supposed to be a generational QB. If he's having problems then why would you expect Trey to not have them.

What is the real joke is trading up and selecting him third overall as a project with very little to go on. Shanahan and Lynch drafting a guy that high who has proved nothing is a joke. Trey Lance declaring for the NFL draft when he is obviously not ready is a joke. Shanahan using him like battering ram in the last game is a joke getting him injured; like a three year old playing with his new Marvel action figure calling the same play over and over again - "Hulk Smash!" is a joke. You have to minimize risk when you draft that high. Yeah maybe it won't work out, maybe it will. I would love to see this Shanahan - Lance marriage take off. But Shanahan and Lynch will get another pass this year if we don't make the playoffs again. And we will have to wait until next season to see if the jokes continue and the honeymoon is over for everyone.

And to think a lot of Trey groupies here were posting that JG should have be cut and Trey would start first game and take us to the Super Bowl. Absolutely laughable. Sure Trey has a ton of potential but he is not there yet and won't be ready to start full time this year and more likely than not will still be a back up next year for most of the season.
so hard to be in here sometimes lol. dudes seriously giving up on a rookie after one start, you wouldve never survived the Alex Smith years lol. from his first stint against seattle to next weeks start he showed improvement, hes only going to get better with practice. strong arm, blazing speed, size and a good head on his shoulders. he will be fine. he needs work. He would not have lasted past the 5 or 6th pick if we didnt take him at 3 so anyone thinking he was a reach there is delusional. GMs drool over QBs with that much physical talent. theres a reason that nobody built like Shaun Hill go in the first round

If Trey turns into a good QB, Mac plus Solomon Thomas & Kinlaw type picks isnt better than Trey. I'd rather have the better QB than the lesser QB and two blown first round picks.

Same people who give up on a proven winner because he does not entertain them with 70 yard passes every second throw

You're just gonna be so sad next year. Either Trey will crush it and prove you wrong, or not and prove you right. What a miserable place to be. Either way, your boyfriend will be gone.

Because he was one of the guys saying that they were going to take Mac at #3.
