Why didn't we do a better job defensively against the Ravens?

Yesterday's game was all about assignment football. Did it hurt to not have a veteran LB in there to compliment the great play of Warner or an experienced d lineman like Ford instead of Valoaga? I would say so. It's also something that this team sees infrequently so it was a tough assignment no matter what. If they get a second chance at the Ravens (God willing), I think they will do better.

It's like we forgot L. Jackson was going to run the ball at times.
It seemed like the strategy was to do that. They shut down the passing game and the RB. It worked pretty well but the O couldn't finish.
Correct me if I'm wrong but on a RPO you can hit the qb? So those plays he pulls it back out from the run we can hit the QB right? I saw a few plays where they went after the RB instea d must be instinct. If there's a next time I'd tag the QB every play as well.

So, that's pretty good.
But we didn't come close to shutting them down either.
Got gashed for over 170 yards on the ground.
The highlight plays didn't show any penetration or take downs of Lamar.
Couldn't stop them at crunch time.
Where did things go off the rails?

Evebmn after the butt whupping the defense put on the Ravens...
The Ravens have the #1 offense in the NFL.
The Ravens lead the NFL in yards per game with 433.
The Ravens lead the league in scoring with 34 per game.
The 49ers held the Ravens to 283 yards.
The 49ers held the Ravens to 20 points, 7 of which came after the 49ers offense gave up the ball at their own 20 yard line.
The game was close and the defense played well enough to win. The 49ers lost because of:
Place kicking
Play calling
QB play

I think that's right but the problem is if the QB decides to throw he becomes a passer and now you're subject to a roughing the passer penalty. It's a really tough offense to defend when you have the entire line designed for it and a 300 lb. fullback. On a wet field like yesterday it made it even harder to pull up and avoid a roughing penalty. Jackson really is a running back more than a passer and it will take a toll on him. You can't carry the ball that often and cut like he does without the risk of an ACL injury. I heard Tim Ryan say this morning that it was really hard to see when Jackson still had the ball because the uni's were dark, the wet ball was dark and Jackson has dark skin. No contrast so the ball was invisible.

Bad game planning. Incredibly dumb.
You have the ends crash down, along with the rest of the DL, meeting at the RB.
We lose contain on the edges and on top of that we failed to hit Jackson on every play.
Too much guessing and not enough specific roles so we play fast and punish. One player punishes Jackson. The rest scrape what's left. Rinse and repeat.

Understood. I thought we did well. We certainly had a chance to win. We need the offense to step it up.Originally posted by CatchMaster80:Originally posted by Cisco0623:Correct me if I'm wrong but on a RPO you can hit the qb? We had more than a chance. I really think we looked like the better team. We have a better defense and a more versatile offense. After the game I didn't feel like I often felt after some of those Seahawks losses in years past where you knew we just weren't good enough. We can beat these guys if we play them in the SB. Besides, we are long overdue for a victory over the Ravens.

All bad choices to select from. so i choose OTHER.
Be proud of this squad. we may have lost another close one, but, what i know is, we are the truth!
This team is legit, it isn't a fluke. We can go up against anyone in this league, and we have a very good chance to beating them.
I say we bounce back against the saints.

We only had a few days to prepare. This game wasn't a division game, and definitely not a must win. They put together a decent plan, but honestly, I'm thinking not too much effort.

What did Jimmy do wrong? If you are referring to the turnover, it is wet and raining outside. He tucked the ball as he went down and the defender made a good play.

Too aggressive on D. We tackled their RB without the ball multiple times yesterday only to see Lamar scamper off for 10-15 yards

It would have been the rams game all over again if we let Ingram run wild on us. We took the lesser of the two evils. Let Jackson have his few scampers and we hit him every chance we had. We just didn't go directly at him. It was a sound gameplan. It passed the eye test imo and the stats seem to back it up. The offense just needed to do a little more. They didn't play bad. They just didn't play great.

Wrong? I don't know but I do know that fumble was a big factor in the loss. That is a fact. If he holds on the 49ers most likely win.

not to mention the rain.
I was impressed at how Jimmy G was even able to throw past 10 yards in that rain from hell.
who has an offense built around the run? Ravens.
All that being said, this game and the seahawk game were instant classics.

When you guys get that D coordinator job you rightfully deserve I'll be watching with interest when you put a plan together to beat an offense like that.
"We should have stopped Ingram, focused on lamar, and also taken their pass attack away!!"" Gtfoh.
The niners crashed on Ingram on purpose.... it took the guess work out of the equation and let our ends play with aggression. It's f**king common to play that way, except in college most teams crash the QB.
But guess what.... Ingram is a god damn force to be reckoned with, and our wide nine is soft in the middle..... hence the focus on stopping him. Had we game-planned to stop lamars outside runs, we would have been crushed up the middle until we focused on it, and THEN we would have been destroyed by Lamar on the outside.
Why did our defense not hold them to zero yards and zero points.... that seems to be your illogical question. That team is full of athletes, and we did better than anyone else at stopping the current version of the ravens offense
