I don't remember any punter or kicker getting this much discussion in the past. I hope he is as good as advertised but I like I said before, I hope we don't need him too often. Four or five times a game is more than enough.

A bonafide punter, which we had none, vs a bunch of knucklehead skill position players whose chances of seeing the field are virtually none.
Your ill-informed comment holds no merit. Like me telling Tesla how to get to the moon.

My comment about him getting discussion was more about the posters. I don't think the front office or Kyle are trying to hype him. A good punter can be a real weapon when your offense is struggling. I hope we don't have to use him too much but even the best offenses get stopped in their own territory so it helps to have a guy that can flip the field. This could result in quick points if the improved pass rush can generate more turnovers.

I've always felt that anything after the 3rd round (possibly the first half of the fourth round) were all experimental development players. In other words, you pick all pro's in the first round and good solid starters in the 2nd and 3rds, and backups from the 4th on.
If you get a starter, let alone an all pro, after the 4rth round, you really got lucky. I think the fact that Kittle was so outstanding - I think gave them some flexibility to move some draft capital to the special teams side, specially after losing their old punter.
As for our DB's and OLine issues, they are still definitely are a questionmark, but the talent, after picking an edge rusher and two Wr's, just weren't there (according to some of the draft nerds) and what I'm hearing is that OLine and defensive back class for next year is supposed to be very promising. If we can get a good kicker next year in the draft, and hopefully we don't use a 4rth for him, the special teams will be set for at least another 4+ years.

There were many punts that Pinion had a chance to flip the field and he failed. It drove me crazy to see the team need a punt to at least the 10 and Pinion punted it to the 20 or 25 yard line.

I think Make@Wish really helps the field position game, specially with this offense being almost able to move the ball at will between the 20's. It's the red zone and scoring that this offense has problems in. If you have a good punter and put that together with a good offense (that has a weak red zone game)now you have an offense that can consistently put an opposing team in very bad position.
Usually a team backed up in their own endzone, will run on 3rd and two, which is to our defense' s strength last year. That gives this team more chances make other teams go 3 and out and give the ball back to our offense.

I'm wondering if what you said above factored into letting Pinion go?

I doubt it, Pinion got offered more money than the FO was willing to pay. With everything the OP said, Pinion STILL got paid top 10 punter money. I'm good with moving on from him but his contract just shows how much a halfway decent punter is needed in the NFL.

you will never hear me arguing for pinion who was a pinhead. i just felt we could have easily addressed it with a more than better replacement with someone other than a 4th rounder. now i will say after i had an initial meltdown on draft day . i said to myself... self. maybe they are setting the stage to dump the guy we have now( he has no name with me). maybe they are trading him later today cuz this guy can also kick off and be the holder for field goals.. but they did not

But, if he's the best punter in the last 15 years, he's worth a 4th. One thing that often goes unnoticed is average starting position. We had a ton of drives, last year, start on the wrong side of the 25. The numbers are shocking and speak to how good of an offensive coach Shanny is when you look at it. I'll try and break this down as simply as I can.
Football outsiders has all the data, btw. We had the worst average starting field position in the NFL and the 2nd worst defensive starting field position. Yet, our offensive success rate at points per drive was 20th. Meaning, we had farther to go than every single NFL team to get into scoring range yet still managed to do it more than 12 other teams. We also moved the ball on yards per drive at a rate of 13th in the league, but also were 31st in turnovers per drive. That means, we either moved the ball into a good spot to flip field position or turned it over. Yet, we didn't flip field position hardly ever. We didn't give up a ton of yardage off our punts, our coverage units were good as we were 13th in punt return average. Pinion had the 3rd worst punting average in the league and led the league in fair catches. That means he wasn't punting very far nearly every time or when he'd punt far, it was low and was able to be returned. He just wasn't a good punter. Another major miss by Baalke. That's why we needed a serious upgrade in that department. But, because we were setup as a team that needed a great punter and a good kickoff guy as well, we had to go for the guy who had the greatest value in the ST's dept. in the draft.

Jonny I appreciate it if you could stop posting so well... making the rest of us look bad. Knock it off.
