Wide Receivers: who gets cut

Also this talk of Goodwin being a surprise cut, is silly, no one on the team can take the top off like him. Not only that, but he has also proven he can run other routes as well. He will command the safeties attention and if the D respects him to much, it will just give him more cushion on the short and intermediate routes.
Bourne and James are on the bubble. If Jordan remains healthy, he will make the team, if not Bourne will have breather.

The niners have so many people that can handle return duties. Even when injured, James couldn't beat out Trent. Hurd is a 3rd round and is too flexible. Also, people need to get it out of their minds that Hurd is only going to play TE, it is just one of the positions that he will placed in to create confusion for the defense. He will line up as big slot, wideout, RB and TE.
With our two new additions, we have 11 wide receivers on our roster. Assuming we keep 6 on the roster, which 5 don't make it? Smallwood, McCaffrey and Dunbar seem like 3 obvious ones as they've been on the bottom of the depth chart.
Goodwin, Pettis, Mathews, Samuel seem to be the only 4 locks to make the active roster.
That would leave Hurd, Bourne, Taylor, James to complete for 2 spots. It seems pretty unfathomable that they'd cut Hurd, a high 3rd round pick. They may plan using him at TE eventually, but he's never played that position before. Bourne was our leading receiver last year, but James is our return man. I think Taylor may be the odd man out, because we don't need another slot receiver, and he's been injured. With his frame, he probably shouldn't play long in the NFL anyway.
Bourne is on the bubble. Jordon depends on his staying healthy. Keeping him as a role player and not as a primary will keep him possibly having less wear and tear.

Makes the team:
Deebo Samuel
Marquise Goodwin
Dante Pettis
Trent Taylor
Jordan Matthews
Richie James (special teams)
Stashed on PUP list just like Joe Williams for an "injury" :
Jalen Hurd
Cut:
Kendrick Bourne
Max McCaffery
Shawn Poindexter (practice squad)
Malik Henry (practice squad)
I could certainly see this.
Like I said...if that happens with Hurd I'm going to be mega pissed off.
As for Richie James we have plenty of other guys who can contribute on special teams, don't think we need a 6th WR for special teams unless we think he's the best WR out of the guys who don't make it.
Obviously, that's all with the idea Hurd is put on I.R. with designation to return. But my best guess is he's good to go and bumps little James right off the roster. I think Kyle wants both small short-area quickness (Taylor) AND size, physically and large catching radius from the slot (Matthews and Hurd)

Matthews better stay healthy this year hes about to hit his prime years. You seen him score that 30-40 yard touchdown in the playoffs vs the saints. Bourne is good but he cant take the top off like that. Matthews and Pettis could end up being a nice tandem Matthews is more than a red zone threat he can stretch the field. Hes all around better than bourne but he has to stay healthy thats the only thing Bourne has over Matthews hes more durable from what we've seen of him. I want Bourne to stay though but if Taylor is gonna breakout he might be a lil more reliable than Bourne.

This is one of the more interesting potential changes in personnel usage. I think Kyle Shanahan is explicitly trying to move towards the big-slot.

Jordan Matthews: Best years (2014-2016) came as a slot WR
Jalen Hurd: 454 of 471 routes were from the slot at Baylor. https://t.co/bxPjwn5hfe
