I was just listening to Donte Whitner. He's a little concerned about the Niners D line being able to get consistent pressure on the QB. His reasoning is that he doesn't feel the D backs are good enough to play man which is what they can be forced to do if they have to start using the LBs to get pressure. The D line on paper looks great but he doesn't like the scheme they are using. He thinks it makes it too easy for the O line to block them.
Did he say anything specific as to why he doesn't like the wide9? It's designed to optimize pass rushing.
"They are not getting any pressure. This defense is built on getting pressure with 4, playing a bunch of guys in coverage, reading the QB, breaking on the ball, and creating turnovers. And when you are not doing that, it forces you to have to allocate more guys to rushing the QB. And I dont know if the 49ers really have the cornerbacks to be able to match up with teams on a consistent basis playing man coverage and zone blitz. They are going to have to make some adjustments in terms of rushing the QB, and maybe throw some games in there. There were not many instances in the game where they had a defensive end go up the field, loop inside...the things that Demeco Ryans was doing, I dont think Steve Wilkes is doing when it comes to the defensive line."
When it comes to DL games, it's there for Wilks to use. That stuff remains since Kocurek is still here. It's up to Wilks to call it. I think too much is being made of the first half of the Rams game. It's true that Wilks could have reacted sooner to what was going on with Stafford completing so many passes. I'd give it a few games before re-thinking the overall scheme. It's not like Stafford is some middling QB - he and McVay are capable of putting up points. I can't tell exactly what was done in the second half (yet?) but it did get better.
I agree with you, I am just relaying what he said. You can thank my mother for teaching me to type fast when I was a child LOL.
I think its way too early for Whitner to have this type of concern after 2 games. I agree with what he is saying, that IF this is something we see for say half the season, it is cause for concern. But right now, I think he is just looking for something to be negative about.
Great, so we're drafting another DL with the top pick next year? LOL
