"Passing game coordinator"

interesting considering he's not from the Pete Carroll tree.

Worked in Tampa with Kyle and Kiffin. Carroll is more or less from the Kiffin tree.

Carroll is more from the George Seffert coaching tree than anything. Using the so called elephant position or the Leo.

This is actually not an uncommon position on coaching staffs. Their usually a good resource for the DC. They typically assist in the game planning and help to analyze the best way to defend the opposition's passing game.

Johnny Holland has a similar title and role in helping with defending the opposition's running game only termed "run game specialist."

Kiffin was right. Carroll left the next year to coach the secondary at Iowa State. But he and Kiffin would connect at various stops in college and the NFL.

Carroll, whose Seattle Seahawks defenses have allowed the league's fewest points for four straight seasons, is asked often about the roots of his philosophy. And nearly every time, his response mentions Kiffin and the one year in Fayetteville, Arkansas.

"I owe him everything," said Carroll, now the oldest head coach in the NFL at 65. "He taught me everything I know about defense

But Carroll believes a defense which struggles to stop the run is a defense that lacks discipline. He prefers speed and athleticism over size and has described the Seahawks' defensive fronts as a 4-3 with 3-4 personnel.

"That really came out of all the way back to Fayetteville," Carroll said. "It was a one-gap principle defense way back then. Monte and I, when we were together in Minnesota with (former Vikings defensive coordinator) Floyd Peters, we were able to continue to build on and NFL-ize our scheme. And so, it's been a way to get guys to attack and play aggressive so that you can get good pass rush and still fit on the run. That's where the secondary fits and stuff like that really comes into play."

Isn't it basically a DB coach?

Not exactly. He will still be involved with them some unless he pulls double duties and is both the db coach and the passing game coordinator. Otherwise it's a lot of film work, study, and game plan assisting. His job is to study opposition schematics and tendencies within their passing attack, then give his opinion to the defensive coordinator of how to stop it.

Barrows confirmed passing game coordinator is just a flowery way to say DB coach and give him more money than Arizona.

He's the DB coach.

That's not the traditional sense in what a defensive passing game coordinator typically does. Their traditionally more involved in the schematics and game planning of the defense than just purely coaching defensive backs unless they pull double duties and do both. Take a look at the Atlanta Falcons this past season. They had a defensive coordinator. A defensive passing game coordinator and a secondary coach. All different people. Marquand Manuel, Jerome Henderson, and Doug Mallory.

But then you had Kris Richard who wore both titles in Dallas as defensive backs coach and passing game coordinator. He fulfilled both duties.

So it's possible that Woods will fill both roles. Kyle spent two years in Atlanta where he really took a liking to this defensive scheme. He was there to see first hand the way the defensive coaching assignments were meshed. There was a clear and concise difference between just a secondary or db coach and the defensive passing game coordinator. Two different roles. One is involved with the defensive backfield to help install defensive gameplans against opposition and one strictly coaches technique to the defensive backfield unless both roles are assumed by the same coach. I'd assume Kyle wants Woods to do the same thing he watched Jerome Henderson do week in and week out, and if he coaches the db backs as well then he will be fulfilling both roles which is why he is being paid more.

Can you provide a link to where Barrows said that? I'm not seeing it.

Remember intially we were looking at Jerome Henderson as DBs coach/passing game coordinator and Saleh as LBs/DC but that fell through.

Woods turned down the Redskins and Browns DB coaching spots so i suspect he will have more of a role with the 49ers plus an obvious choice as DC if Saleh struggles early next season.

Solid hire. He has a terrific resume as DBs coach and was ok as a DC. He was Tomlin's right hand man in Tampa and Minnesota and comes from that Monte Kiffen coaching tree.

Same difference (DB coach / passing game coordinator)......

Kris Richard holds the same title in Dallas.

And to be honest, I thougth Richard was more the DC than Marinelli at the end of their seasons.
Should this hire fortify the scheme or execution of the scheme?
