Saleh. I think you can expect to see a greater diversity of coverage looks next season.

I wonder if Saleh gonna let Woods, Kocurek and others call individual plays on defense like Harbaugh did with his elite offenses

Was hoping we would hire this guy... but he's not our DB coach? Are we hiring someone else for that position?

That would make me very happy. I know thl and Hero were talking about that the other day. More man and cover 7, IIRC.

Johnny Holland holds the title of run game specialist and OLB coach. Saleh will call plays.

He could also be the DB coach. Kris Richard held the DB coach/passing game coordinator title in Seattle.

Woods was the DB coach for Gary Kubiak in 2016 in DEN. I think it's odd that when DEN switched HCs from Kubiak to Joseph (2017), that Joseph promoted Woods from DB coach to DC. I would have thought Joseph would bring in his own guy that he's worked with in the past to run Joseph's defensive scheme. Instead, Joseph kept Woods and promoted him. They had no prior working experience with one another that I could find. This kind of speaks highly to Woods, asked to help install and run a scheme that he had no prior experience with.

With DEN, Wade Philips ran heavy man coverage. When Philips left, Joseph and Woods installed a defense that had a healthy mix of both.

Under former defensive coordinator Wade Phillips, now of the Los Angeles Rams, the Broncos ran almost exclusively man-to-man coverage. Under Woods, Denver has shifted more towards a scheme that features a blend of man and zone coverages.

This. Dude was a DC (very much capable), I suppose he'll handle it all back there in the secondary.

I mean it's not like the 2018 49ers didn't play man or Cover2, or other coverages. They played combo coverages, they pattern matched, they did more than just Cover3. But when mixing up coverages, it has to be for a reason, not just do it to do it. My guess is Woods will bring the experience when it comes to game planning. Sure Saleh was in the meetings when the gameplan gets finalized (SEA, JAC), but how much of it was his ideas?

The 49ers lost Jason Tarver after 2017 and he was the only guy on that defensive staff with DC experience (not positive about that). Woods most likely has experience in scouting the offense and installing a sound gameplan that maybe Saleh, in his inexperience, lacks.
I would still bring in Marquand Manuel to help with the defense.
