Originally posted by Marmatag:I do hold Shanahan accountable for the turnovers. In general, if you have guys who cannot execute, then, you need to adjust how you play the game. That means a less potent offense. Look at our offense with Harbaugh's first year, when we went 13-3. Alex Smith threw as little as possible in every game, because we knew he was a liability. Having a great defense and running game helps.
But let's pause for a moment:
This defense is bad.
And not because the personnel is woeful, or because the core concept is bad. It's bad because guys are constantly out of position and confused with what to do. Compare this to Fangio's defense. Everyone was in the right spot. Having a badass front seven, with what would have been a hall of fame linebacker, and great d-line like Justin Smith, certainly helped. But at the core of it, guys knew where to line up and stayed on assignment. Much of our problems on defense are the result of busted coverages. We give up a touchdown every week on a busted coverage. That is the product of bad coaching. There's a difference between "Garbage Corner X" getting beaten, or "Terrible Safety Y" taking a bad angle and missing a tackle, and "guy running uncovered down the field, wide open" which happens with regularity.
Miscommunication and huge coverage gaps created by mental errors are a direct result of coaching.
The personnel might not be great. But these kinds of errors shouldn't happen, even with mediocre personnel.
Harbs had a top end D to allow him to run the ball and be conservative. That doesn't exist here. The offense has to put pts on the board for them to have any chance to win games. Throw in backups who shouldn't be in that's gonnq equal turnovers.
I mean I'm sure he could have CJ throw screens all game and run it. They'd be down 30-3 by the 2nd QR though...and people would complain BUT turnovers would be down
I agree with what you said about the defense
