What really tied that defense together was acquiring a dominant edge rusher and adding better defensive playcalling. They didn't need to start from scratch, just add at the right positions.
I think with Buckner, Foster, Warner, Day, Thomas, Colbert, Tartt...etc, there is a nice collection of young talent but you need the outside pass rush element if you want to run what is largely a vanilla defensive scheme and have people be successful. More depth at CB and S overall would be welcome.
It's the webzone. Just goes hand in hand.
People overreacting. This year you'll be really hard pressed to find any great defense with the new rules, especially if they don't have guys who can rush the passer consistently.
Wouldn't shock me at all to see Thomas be an Alex type of player. Someone who initially looked like a bust at the high draft pick but ends up having a pretty solid NFL career. Hopefully it would be for us and not other teams.

Without Sherman, is the secondary better today than in 2016?

we basically have Buckner, Foster, and Warner. The entire secondary needs a rehaul. Sherman is on his last legs.
Maybe if they are smart, they get an edge rusher. But you never know with this regime.
The good thing is that if we start the rebuild now, it will go along nice with a new defensive coordinator running a different philosophy.
Which edge rusher did you want them to get that would actually make a difference?

Could have been two huge pieces to the defense, instead of Solly and McGlinch. 💯
McGlinchey is a huge piece of the offense.
Agreed...no issues with MM at all. If fans haven't noticed, the OL and pass protection is kind of a big deal.

Nothing builds a stacked team like 2 safeties while the rest of the team blows.

No we do not need a rebuild. I don't have a problem with the coaching/scheme either. But I am SICK AND TIRED of drafting guys and playing them out of their natural position.
Solomon Thomas is not a DE. He belongs exclusively on the inside alongside Buckner. I expect he will get this chance in 2019 as we let Armstead walk in FA.
Jimmy Ward is a f**king safety. Playing him at CB is not best utilizing his skillset. He is a good tackler, has good range, and has above average coverage skills for a safety. We need those skills at safety as our current safeties (outside of oft injured Tartt) are s**tty tacklers.
Eric Reid was a good tackler and was more durable than Ward. Why did we let him go???
We obviously need a proper EDGE rusher. We have guys playing there that are career backups or not suited for the position.
Our safeties are pure s**t. This really sucks since Reid and Ward were both first round picks and neither is playing safety for us. I understand the teams desire to get more coverage ability from that position. They want safeties that are more like corners. But I believe that our tackling problems are a direct result of this.

I thought we were in a rebuild. We just aren't done yet. We all can see that we are still missing the edge rusher which is the 2nd hardest position to fill ( after QB ) and depth all around. The DB's show some promise but we still need a shutdown corner and experience at the other DB positions. I see a house 3/4 built not an old dump that need to be torn down.

Tartt and Colbert are two guys I had real high hopes for this season and both have played very poorly. Neither even looks like an NFL starter at this point

not going to get one until the draft next year. But there are going to be plenty of options if we get a top 3 pick, like I am predicting.

I wasn't aware MM was the next Anthony Munoz. 🙄

Mike McGlinchey is not the next Anthony Munoz nor did anyone say he would be. It's rare to come by an OL talent like Munoz was.
He is however the next Mike McGlinchey and as a rookie he shown pretty well in pass pro and has been a big part our run blocking and he has a lot of room to grow still. Has the potential to be a 10+ year cornerstone in the trenches and in the locker room just like Staley has been.
