LOL. Yeah, inducting someone into the HOF wasn't the purpose of this exercise.

I was curious to see how the game plan changed for BDN on such a short week. A podcast noted we moved from 21 personnel (Kyle's staple) to 11 (McVay's staple).
But aside from that change up, I wanted to watch the first half of the Cards game (CJB) vs. the first half of the Raiders (BDN) and see how many times both were in shotgun vs. under center on just passing plays and play calling for each on 3-step vs. 5/7-step drops.
Context is important as the Cards have a much better defense compared to the Raiders. That also affects game planning as does a QB starting his first ever game.
If a QB starts in shotgun, I considered that the equivalent of a 3-step drop as that's the distance you'd wind up at had you taken the snap under center. From there, if he takes one step and fires, I still considered that a 3-step drop. Two or more steps off shotgun is a 5/7-step drop.
Here's what I found from just passing plays:
CJB was in shotgun 10 times and under center 5 times. Of that 15, 3-step drops (7) and 5/7-step drops (8).
BDN was in shotgun 11 times and under center 7 times. Of that 18, 3-step drops (12) and 5/7-step drops (6).
So, no doubt, BDN's game plan included many more 3-step drops and again, I'm sure a lot of that had to do with the Raiders being such a poor defense and our extra receiver(s) being wide open instantly off the LOS. So the next test for BDN will be to face a stronger secondary, particularly one that presses at the LOS and see how his pocket feel is when he has to buy time and wait longer for receivers to get open. Also, as that happens, it will be interesting to see if Kyle starts to dial up more 5/7-step drop plays.
Side note: Kyle might have a pretty big tell in his offense and I saw the Cards/Raiders try to exploit it. Just about every time we lined the QB under C, it was a run play or if a pass, a quick out IIRC (not a big fear in stacking the box and run blitzing).
As you can see above, we didn't pass much out from under C. I think I only saw one run out of shotgun. I think this is why we are seeing so many TFL (and also big runs b/c if you get through the first wave of a run blitz, there's lots of real estate).

Were not putting our qbs in a position to be successfull with missed tackles collapsing pockets and penalties. Cj has an achilles heel with crowded pockets but maybe mullens does too. Well see when we play a real team.

Nice to see the webzone throwing cj under the bus.

I'm happy Mullens looked good against the worst team in the league. I like both qb's. they are a work in progress. Mullens wasn't very ambitious and he shouldn't be right now. We may have two guys who can compete for starting reps which is good news for us. No bigger story than that right now.
Beathard has played himself onto the bench and possibly onto the waiver wire. He gives the 49ers no spark whatsoever. His W/L record is abysmal. Mullens showed a spark that Beathard hasn't.

Then and undrafted FA comes in and blows him away. He's gotta be SO bummed

Again, blows him away against the faiders who start two muppets at left and right tackle. Well see where we are in two weeks.
