He's fine as a backup. Good tackler, ST teams, once in a while makes a great play in coverage. Glad he's back.
Don't want him starting at all.

He works good in heavy coverage packages too. It always seems like he gets a ton of fumbles
I kinda liked him and Cyprien playing some snaps at SAM.

I like how he's physical and fast. If he drastically improves on his coverage, he could be elite. It doesn't feel like Tartt is coming back so, this is the year Harris has to break out unless he just wants to be a back up forever...

I'd say it's the Moore and Ward show for the next year or 2 and Harris can play if one of them gets injured or as a LB in obvious passing downs

ALL a player can ask for...

and if you look at his stats on a limited role..

The 49ers made Harris a sixth-round selection out of Florida in 2018. He registered 37 tackles, three passes defensed, and two forced fumbles through 16 games this past season. Harris, 26, has recorded 111 tackles, eight passes defensed, and five forced fumbles through his three NFL seasons.

how can you NOT like the guy ??

Easy. He absolutely sucks in coverage. He's only good for forcing fumbles

... AND you rather see the speedy Moore and the athletic Ward out there not doing ANYTHING at all ??

They've had their chances, average at best... why keep giving them chances when Harris at least shows potential... there's a lot of SS out there that does very well not being good with coverage...

Why? Bc they don't give up tds and huge plays in coverage like Harris who does like their going out of style. He's a backup for a reason. A very very good reason.
Marcell "Whiffner" Harris stinks. He is an awful tackler. Yes, he will knock your block off, but he whiffs more than he connects. He's a total liability coverage. He has zero anticipation, zero feel and garbage technique. People like to crap on Jimmie Ward, but I can't recall ONCE--not once since he moved to safety--Jimmie Ward allowing a receiver to get behind him. Jimmie doesn't make plays, but he also isn't a liability. Dude does his job. Marcell Harris allowed a receiver to get behind him twice in one season playing limited snaps. He was an underthrown ball vs the NYG from making that 3, too.

What the hell was Marcell Harris doing here? What technique is this? This is so bad lol.

No anticipation at all for the crosser. Dude is oblivious.

The Whiffner doing what he does best

It's a one year deal and if he doesn't prove himself in TC, he can easily be cut.

It makes so much sense now to convert Harris to LB. I thought Harris too often did poorly breaking down ball carriers in the open field and would whiff badly on tackles. Hopefully by removing him from open space (deep zones), it will hide his weakness and highlight his strength - aggression. With James Bettcher on board, he has first hand experience at turning a safety into a LB.

From an 8/9 article form The Athletic:
Bettcher, whose official title is senior defensive assistant/run game specialist, has been a defensive coordinator with the Cardinals and Giants, which means he can be a sounding board for first-time coordinator DeMeco Ryans.

He also has expertise in linebackers, including converting them from safety, which Bettcher helped do with Arizona's Deone Bucannon in 2015.

"One of the things we thought when we made that move was, Deone would strike anyone," Bettcher recalled. "He was going to run and he was going to hit. If we could hone it down and give him some of the fundamentals he was going to be pretty good. And he ended up being really good."

Bettcher sees the same traits in erstwhile safety Marcell Harris. He's been strong — and aggressive — around the line of scrimmage since his rookie season in 2018. His struggles have come in deep coverage, which is why the 49ers are turning him into a linebacker this season.

As was the case with Bucannon, Bettcher said no one is concerned about how Harris — he's listed at 215 pounds; Bucannon entered the league at 211 pounds — will deal with centers and pulling guards because he's already shown he's fearless in the trenches.

What coaches will be looking for Saturday against the Chiefs is how quickly Harris reacts to various plays and movement.

"I think it's just how good his eyes are going to be?" Bettcher said. "When a motion happens, how's he going to react? I know he's working the hardest on playing the position 10 yards further back — it's different. It's different with your eyes, it's different with your footwork."

I do remember Harris struggling with gap assignments in the run game. That needs to be cleaned up if he wants to make a living playing in the box.
is Harris playing Will? the dude will hit anything that comes near, heat seeking missile
Another University of Florida knucklehead. Ever notice how many of them that school produces?
He's still on the roster?
