Jerick 'Jet' McKinnon is a Chief.

This was from an article by PFF looking at upcoming training camps. May be a good indicator of why Shanahan thought he was worth the investment. Not only does he have the potential to improve the receiving game out of the backfield but also upgrades the protection.

"Head coach Kyle Shanahan will be looking for Jerick McKinnon, signed to a lucrative deal in free agency, to upgrade a backfield that was arguably the league's worst in the passing game a season ago. During his final season in Minnesota, McKinnon was one of only three qualifying running backs to earn receiving and pass-blocking grades of 75.0 or higher"
Gurley signed an extension for 15M/yr. Its the way of the future. Top RBs will start getting paid.

Jet's contract won't be top-10 in a year. In a couple years and if he's performing well, he'll look like a bargain.

Yes, if anyone understands the value of PP for his QB, it's Kyle...lost a Superbowl because of it.

His ypc average of 3.59 was second worst in the league. Don't see him as a full time back, more of a 3rd down specialist.

That's what he's been used as and those stats reflect that. It's quite obvious Kyle has a much different plan for him. They wouldn't have compensated him the way they did if they chose to primarily use him only on 3rd down.

Just a guess, but by yrs end, he has more receiving touches than running touches. His yardage will be heavily receiving yards is my bet.

Exactly. They knew what they had in Hyde but decided to give McKinnon the big money. Gotta trust Shanahan on this one

I think it was on Maiocco's podcast, but Hyde was mentioned. The feeling was that the Niners liked Hyde, but that he didn't do enough to create plays on his own.

As for McKinnon, I think he is going to be much better at running between the tackles than people expect, and what he adds to the pass game is going to be an all-around upgrade over Hyde.

There seems to be a large number of people that think McKinnon is too small to be a featured back, but he is nearly the same size as Frank Gore was, so not sure I agree with that assessment. I guess we will see in a few short weeks

If Jet balls out, we got a hell of a deal for 4 years.
