I wish they moved AA inside in 2020 next to Jones. Would've been no need for the Kinlaw pick.
As of that posting(pre ferrell signing)
The niners have three 1st team starters. AA, Bosa, and Hargrave. The #4/5 could be Givens and jackson.
Do you want Jackson setting the edge on 1st+10 2nd+5?

AA at DE isn't the best. But as long as he is not a pass rush DE, he is a decent big DE. It also would allow a strong 3 man front for Bosa to stand up over a guard or center.

But post ferrell signing. He does what AA would do at DE. but curious how Ferrell will look 1v1 with space versus G-C-G

I think if you find a way to get all 4 of them on the field at the same time. Bosa, hargrave, armstead, and drake. You can probably expect armstead and drake to hopefully combine to 12-15 sacks between them.

I think armstead is the guy you have to swing out. Hargrave has to play in his natural spot even if that pushes armstead to the outside.

I totally get it. But I figured a signing or draft pick was coming.

I definitely see Bosa-AA-Hargrave-Jackson as the primary 3rd down package. On most other downs (nickel package), right now Ferrell replaces Jackson. Kalia Davis and Kevin Givens likely rotates in on these packages.

If we are in base, then and only then is AA kicked out to DE, with maybe McGill right now inside with Hargrave. Ferrell can also get some snaps at DE to rest Bosa and AA. Kinlaw gets in where he fits in to rest either Hargrave or McGill.

Looking at the combination like that, I hope we leave to draft with 2 run stuffers DTs and another super athletic edge to develop. I expect one will likely be on the practice squad, but I'd like some options.

I'm sure Heroism will give his thoughts on this as well but I've also pondered how they run this.

Paas rush is the primary skill set of the 3T and there's an extra reason you want Hargrave next to Bosa on nearly every down, base and rush. So does that move AA to 1T? Only 1 team ran more than 50% of the time on first down (Bears) last year. It's a pure passing league now. Even Kyle was only at 38.46% (8th).

AA was born and raised inside a 3-4 so do we need to really move him out to DE in base? Can he stay exclusively at 1T?

I'm not Hero, but I think the days of AA at DE in base are over. That was a Saleh thing when the 49ers were still using the 4-3 Under and wanted big AA over the TE to dominate the strong side of the OL (TE side).

Watching him blow up the Raiders on the goal line suggests to me he can do it.

I hope so. Athletic QB's loved seeing AA at DE.

Hero thinks we'll see both AA and Hargrave switch between 3T and 2i depending on the circumstances more than the specific downs.

I agree.

Exactly. He is a monster inside. He isn't Hargrave as a pass rusher but most guards get destroyed by AA. He can own on the outside as well but isn't athletic enough to seal the deal in space.

I'm not the expert but I do expect Ferrell-AA-Jackson-Bosa in base, the alternating responsibilities for Hargrave and AA. Hoping we also draft a run stuffer at DT that can give us 20 or more snaps in base. Then Jackson replaces Ferrell on passing downs and our guys go kill the QB. If we can get the space eater that bodes well because it allows more rest for AA and Hargrave.

It also shows to me we have more space than people realize- 2-3 rookies could make the team on D-line. Ideally I'd want a 4th (a second run stuffer) on the practice squad as insurance for injury (Kinlaw), plus he's most likely gone after this year anyway.

We must release Armstead because he will earn to 23 millions a year and this year. We will be dead salary cap!! He is not doing a great for defense by sacks as records..

Buzz is a fake. Disappointing I now.
People are sometimes too much into stats. What Arik does is stuffs the run and takes up two OL players because other wise he pushes the line back. Only Aaron Donald does better inside. Because of this the LB are allow to make the plays. Bosa is allowed to make plays. Hargrave on the other side of Arik will either get sacks because of this or take up two players and maybe Arik will make sacks and his numbers will go up. This was evident when they had Buckner.

Hargrave will also allow the edge rushers Celine and Jackson to be tied up one on one. Four linemen will take up Five linemen and either a/and TE/RB. Somewhere there is going to be a breakdown.

Not to mention a timely Blitz by the LB or Safety will only blow it up if planned right by Wilkes.

Like it has been mentioned, Arik on the outside was a waste for a long time, only because he was versatile and they had no one else did they do that.

The others will help to keep Hargrave and Arik fresh. How they platoon the players is going to be interesting critical. the opponents will have to/need to take advantage of that and make plays when they are no in their
