Shanahan:

I told you so...

He had faith in our OL talent development the only real hole was LG and we threw a lot of late round picks there hoping one would turn out

I am pretty confident in the other 4 positions and I think LT RT and RG we don't even need to worry about at all in terms of upgrades

On the center position I think either Jarrett Patterson or Carver Willis will fit next year Center position-- that's why ShanaLynch didn't extend Brendel's contract. Here's the differences between the two.

...the contrast comes down to technical interior anchor vs. athletic perimeter mobility. Jarrett Patterson is a cerebral, natural interior blocker who wins with high-IQ positioning, strong hand re-sets, and a stout base that stops bull rushes cold—though he lacks the speed to run wide. Conversely, Carver Willis is a converted tackle who lacks Patterson's pure interior anchoring power but brings vastly superior foot speed, a quick first step, and the lateral mobility required to match speed-rushers or pull outside as a blocker in zone-heavy offensive schemes. <I'll just add that Carver is an extremely bright individual by many accounts and that, to me, gives him an edge vs Patterson. >

I'd love *either one* to win the center starting position next year.
Colton McKivitz is a guy who just continues to improve his game each year. Of course it's early only one game in this season but he looked great against the Rams. I was very pleasantly surprised by the guard play as well. Puni seems to me as a player who is likely to get back to playing like a potential stud OG we saw his rookie year before the early season injury last year hurt his play in year 2. Colby was the surprise for me at LG; I really expected that position to be a complete dumpster fire this year. IF he can continue to play like he did week 1, this OL has a chance to surprise.

amazing what a healthy Puni does for this line

That's what I've been saying forever. They people complaining didn't realize he was hurt. He injured his knee, got rushed back, was not fully healthy, toughed it out and played anyway. That was the problem. Not that he's bad. He's our 2nd best offensive linemen. After Trent Williams.

I hope Enrique follows Colton's trajectory.

I honestly think it's Mckivitz he has been maybe one of the top RT for 2 years now

McKivitz has really played well and stepped up his game. He has really improved. I hope he stays around for a long time. We might need him after Trent retires. I can't believe how much he improved.

PFF ranked him #9 overall OTs after this one game.

Puni also made a big difference. He looked like the top tier guard he was two years ago.

Other than Colby (#40), the entire OL was ranked in the top 16 at their respective positions.

Best o-line in the league? The Rams have a stacked d-line and the reigning DPOY and got dominated. No excuses regarding travel or health will be accepted.

I'm really glad he stayed with the team and his asking price was reasonable. In comparison, Laken Tomlinson, Aaron Banks, and Jaylon Moore - cashed in on their development and the 49ers couldnt afford them, and lost them to free agency. Thank god the 49ers got (i think) compensatory draft picks for losing them. They used the compensatory picks to improve their draft capital. Rinse and repeat.

49ers drafted 8 players in the 2026 draft and no draft pick was lower than a 5th rounder. Pretty impressive in my book.

None of them have lived up to the deals they got.

McKivitz had quietly become a solid starter. Nice development curve from him.
It's one game into the season, but based on the 49ers performance in Week 1, it's fair to start giving Lynch and Shanahan some grace regarding the OL. People forget Puni played at a borderline, if not, Pro Bowl level his rookie year, and now that he is healthy, he is on that same trajectory.

Names, draft status and big contracts don't make for good players, players, development, scheme fit and cohesiveness do. It's early, but look how far Connor Colby has come in just 1 year, or where McKivitz, a player I myself was VERY harsh on his first 2-3 years, is right now.

There are gonna be games this year where the DL will have their number this year, as there is for every single team even with the best OL's, but I'm excited to see how the next few weeks turn out for this OL
