Entirely different defenses. Both defensive lines are stacked, but the difference lies in the DCs. Vic Fangio is way more conservative than McDonald and mainly has his guys win 1-on-1. Mike MacDonald is a totally different monster. He is brilliant at stressing Shanahan' pass protection with disguised pressures, manipulating the OL's rules against itself, and creating free rushers from different directions. They're not comparable.

Simply put: MacDonald weakness the 49ers' pass protection and leaves them vulnerable before even allowing his DL attack.

So if we drafted a guard in round 1 those things wouldn't be a factor? Seems like thats an issue regardless.

Im far more concerned that we cant cover their receivers. Same with Rams.

Nobody said anything about drafting a guard in round 1. You brought up the Eagles, and I explained why they're different from the Seahawks.

The point is the 49ers went into an offseason with a big problem, and that problem remains going into the 2026 season because they put little to no resources into addressing the issue.

But your suggesting the issue with the Seahawks is how they attack us not their talent. That would be an issue regardless of what they added. Obviously they have shown they can hold up against an immensely talented line.

Again secondary was a bigger problem than o line was in offseason. Did literally zero to address safety. Least they drafted a guard.

Nick Emmanwori is a one-man wrecking crew. There is no one else like him in any defense. He can cover. He can stop the run. He can blitz. He allows McDonald to be very creative in a way he wouldn't if he didn't have NE.

He can do all that, especially against a team that has no deep threat, like the 49ers were last year. If you recall, in both of the last two games, Seattle played one-on-one in the secondary with 4, sometimes only 3, because we had no real receiving threat. That allowed them to commit 7 or 8 men to attack the LOS and Purdy.

With Evans, Stribling, and Deebo, plus a healthy Kittle, McDonald will be forced to change his scheme, which will help the 49er OL.
Totally agree - the MM defense does exactly what the KS offense used to do to defenses -- use their scheme and rules against them by changing alignments with motion, shifts, etc.. The way defenses are evolving to thwart KS to a degree is to simplify their coverage rules and find more versatile players that can disguise their scheme and enable them to adapt to motions and shifts without moving players in a way that gives away their defensive call. So it will actually be interesting to see how KS and McVay now evolve the offense to attack MM's defenses now that they have 2 years of experience it with it.

So this is scheme related and not talent related?
I hope this Patterson cat can turn into somebody, especially now that he's around (supposedly) better O line players / talent

This is a good question, and I think we know how the Niners feel by their actions. They must feel their guys are good enough to get the job done, and that they can make adjustments coaching and schematic wise to give themselves a better chance.

here's an awesome short clip with MacDonald talking about how uses his fronts to dictate the terms for opposing offensive lines' protections and stay one step ahead of them by forcing them to play his game. It gives you a small glimpse into the chess match happening at the line of scrimmage:

What do you mean?
Seattle SB was legitimate but they won it because a) they got the #1 seed, b) it was the weakest pool of playoff teams in at least 10 years.

Think about it: the Seahawks got a bye, got to play a practice squad niners team ON A SHORT WEEK at home. Then they got to play the rams with an extra day of rest. In the sb, they got to play the worst sb representative in probably 20 years. People talk about the niners having an "easy schedule". Go look at the patriots.

Somehow every time we make the an we have to overcome mahomes, and when other division teams do they play absolute cupcakes.

Back to Seahawks, let's say they lose that game to rams with the weird 2 point play. Now THEY go on the road, extra game, short week, darmold with no home playoff games.... Guaranteed they make it no further than the divisional round.

But that's sports for you I guess!

It's against their philosophy, Oline coaching is more important than talent shown in college. With so many high paid players we probably can't afford to tier OLinemen. That's why McKivitz continues along with Brendel. But if we drafted an OLinemen or 2 instead of some of our unproductive 2nd SF 3rd rounders of late, things would be different.
i hoping Willis can learn fast.

Mckivitz is a top 10 RT.

Great point. Colton also was a 5th round pick while Carver Willis is a 4th rounder. Colton is a great example of the 49ers successfully developing OLine talent. If they are successful in developing Carver and Cruz into good, above average OLine starters (like Colton) - they've saved themselves from expending day one and day two draft capital on the OLine. I hope Colby gets back on track too - i think he can play at center also if he can just get out of Foerster's dog house.
