How will the starting 22 be better than when they last walked off the field?

As of today, we are worse since we lost 3/4ths of our secondary + Bowman. However they will be better than last year after the draft (and FA). They had to get rid of the older guys and create room for the draft picks.

This.
You should also expect players like Kaep, Reid, Brock, etc that haven't really been playing NFL football for too long to improve. That's how it works. Players tend to get better with more playing time, more "live bullets" if you will. Especially QBs and guys in the secondary as they learn the NFL game more and more, as they see more looks and instinctively know what to do rather than think about it.

Over the hill Gore again?
How many years have people been predicting the demise of Gore.
No more Lovey Dovey stuff-ok, if you insist.
Predicting the demise of Gore is a game that fools play. It will happen eventually.
Maybe it will happen this year, but this annual carping about Gore is flat out boring.
Please stop this inane whining about Gore.
People who think that think "winning of the off season" has import seem to be deluded.
Winning football games is important.
And how in the name of the devil can anyone decide who is winning or losing the off season when we are only five days into the new year.
I think a few people are getting sucked into the media hype generated to keep people focused on the NFL during the off season.

We have 5 million dollars. That barely allows us to pay our draft picks.
Gain 6+ million after June 1st from the Carlos Rogers release so we are just fine with cap space.

The team has, at best, evenly swapped safeties and is at least ro this point, a little worse at corner -- although if Culliver can come back strong they may improve there. The point is, they could really use a key free agent signing to help the team improve. The real game changing free agents are spoken for, and the 49ers couldn't have afforded them anyway. A veteran wide receiver would be the only place remaining that the team has a chance to improve. I believe in building through the draft, but it's a crap shoot. You never really know how much a drafted player will be able to contribute in the first year. The only early drafted wide receiver that made an impact last year was Keenan Allen, a thrid roumder. I'm hoping they open up the offense a bit and start forcing the ball down the field -- like the second half of the superbowl 2 years ago. The team may improve substantially from the additiom of the res-shirted players and the continued development of other key young players. It looks like an off-season of adding depth (free agents) and youth through the draft (future). There are basically three ways for the team to be better than last year's squad (1) a deeper wr corp - to which adding a free agent veteran will help; (2) the emergence of the red shirts; and (3) a better offensive philosophy that dramatically improves the passing game -- this is more about the coaching than the players. Remember, every season is different. It's not just Seattle we have to worry about. There will be new challengers coming up who were able to improve dramatically. The 49ers also have some downside to manage. Some of their better players, like J Smith and F Gore, will be a year older and probably less effective than they were in January of 2014. I will say this though, if the team has a good draft this year, the 2015/2016 team will be in great position to win Superbowl L at home.
WHY ARE YOU COMPLAINING WHEN FA JUST STARTED?
we havent even gotten to the f**king draft yet

I see our center position becoming better and much younger. Kilgore will compete with a rook, IMO. I expect Kilgore to win out, but we will have better depth due to being younger and more talented. After C, I see our WR corp becoming much stronger. Even if we don't succeed in attaining a WR in FA, the draft is filled with very talented WRs, the deepest class ever. Add those rooks with Patton, who came on strong after the injury, and you shall see much improvement. I even expect us to be f faster to blow the top of some of those Ds.
Next is the CB squad. Rogers and Brown are not elite CBs with one being too old and the other just too average and I love Brown. I see Cully being in the forefront with a rook possibly challenging him while Brock take the other side. Again, our depth will improve and we should see better coverage from the CB group. Now their bros the Safeties will be solid with Reid and Bethea. I expect us to draft Bethea's successor in the draft. Bethea VS Whitner to me is equal from a skill POV, but huge in the contract dept.
Oddly enough besides the secondary, center and WR positions, NT may be the one place where we may even get better. Ian Williams will be a question mark coming back from injury. He did well in his limited reps against GB, but we just don't have enough to go on except his TC which was exceptional. I see Williams, Dial and a rook compete for that starter position. Personally, I have wanted a new NT since we missed out on Wilfolk for Woods and it's been $$$$ on therapy sessions to get over that one. If for whatever reason Nix is there, I am one to say get him! There are just too many good CB and WRs in the draft.
So C, NT, WR, and in a way, SS and CB will be better. Crabs will be back n healthy. Kilgore and rook will be able to explode better off the line and contain than Goody. If Williams gets back to form and he consistently demonstrates what he did in TC, then we will be much improved at NT. Now the secondary will be the question, but I have to believe that we can find someone better than Rogers and Brown. Brock has one and seems like improvement on both so there's that. What if it was a rook like Gilbert, Dennard or Fuller or even Cully? Still an improvement over Rogers and Brown, IMO, so we will definitely get better in the secondary
Imagine, we can still improve this team. This very hungry seasoned team. We are due.

QB position just got upgraded 10 fold, so I fully expect The Gab to start looking to other targets than Boldin. Crabs and Vernon will start getting a lot more into the mix, and now that we wont be playing a simplistic college offense we can run the ball in a NFL style pro offense, not this gimmick one read limited stuff. Kind of wish we still had Jenkins to help out but he was worthless when you had a QB that couldn't look at his 2nd read, let alone 3rd. We had to let him go somewhere where he had an experience QB who looked his way. It was only fair.
Anyways it's gonna be nice getting a fresh start at QB. I really think The Gab can carry this #1 defense better than the past two QB's and that's really going to get us over the edge. So excited and can't wait for my new G7 jersey.

You know what's interesting is that the 49ers team following the 2011 season..........the sentiment from the team and fanbase was mostly to keep the team as much intact as possible, and only bolster the weak spots (at the time, mainly WR).
Remember how big a deal it was that we returned all 11 starters on defense? The OL remained largely the same, Dixon stayed, Ginn stayed, Kyle wasn't cut, Alex stayed, and we traded Morgan for Manningham, while adding LMJ and AJJ through the draft. Less turnover from 2011 to 2012 than 2010 to 2011.
Now we have started to see the bigger changes coming. Not huge changes, but definitely long time favorites have started to go one by one starting with last year.

Our WR corp, which has been thin for three years, is a big problem. Baalke cannot seem to get this right. you can't count on a drafted player to make a big impact in his first year. If you watch the telestrators when they show the WRs vs the DBs, our WRs lack separation. The slower your WRs are, the closer the safeties play to the line of scrimage making it even harder to get open. I was really hoping the 49ers had gotten Harvin last year instead of Boldin. It ended up working out much better for SF when Havin got hurt. The fact is that the Seahawks the division with no contribution from Harvin and with Boldin have a big year, albeit the Niners had literally nobody else to throw to. If you happened to watch the Superbowl you would have seen just how explosiven Harvin can be. on our side of the ball, Boldin will be another year older and slower. Even if we get past Seattle this year, Denver will be dramatically improved on defense adding 3 stud-starters. I don't agree with breaking the bank in free agency -- but I don't think sitting on your hands is the bright move either. The 49ers have done zero to improve their starting 22 thus far -- and they don't have any "red-shirts" at the wide receiver position. That only leaves the draft -- which as we know by the drafting of AJ Chief -- is a crap shoot. As a position group, the 49er WR corp is in the bottom 1/3 of the NFL. We will not win a SB until this group is a strength instead of a weakness.

I know this will sound weird BUT this happens every year...BIG assumptions that these big-named FA's are going to dramatically increase a unit. Yet, after the FA "win" period, in the real world, they rarely pan out even remotely close to the $ and on the field. You can go on and on and on with teams like Dallas and Denver and Washington, etc.

4. Roman will learn how to use more of 3/4 set WR for offense and learn how to succeed in the Red Zone!!
5. Fangio we be told to rotate the D-line a tad bit more (not a lot more, but at least a tad bit more)
6. Kap will learn how to (FINALLY) go through all his reads before taking off / force feeding Crabs....
7. Jed York will have to share his wealth with the 13th man the way that Paul Allen did to ensure us playoffs and possibly the 6th ring.
8. The entire secondary will have to watch CAWKS' games (learn from the best at what they do)... learn how to hold / cheat and get away with it.
Is this urban legend still around? The 49ers rotated A LOT on the DL last season. I covered this during the season, in some cases Justin Smith had his snaps drop by 15-25 in a game compared to a year prior.

Yeah, he rotated a bit more than previous years, but a tad bit more won't hurt this coming season
