This. Anyone expecting that the 49ers will replace the big salary of Rogers with another big salary CB is setting themselves up for disappointment IMO. If the 49ers sign anyone at CB, it'll be a mid-level guy who's hanging around in the bargain bin after all the other teams have finished their crazy spending sprees.

Davis close to a deal, not with Colts.

I'll believe it when it happens. As of now it is more of Florio's "anonymous sources" and he even covers his a** by saying the "situation is fluid and dynamic and may change"

LOL
Best news yet.

Maybe Vernon can offer him a Jamba Juice or two for signing here
So what does cutting Rogers do for out cap situation?

It means saving $5 mil and some change in cap space, and Baalke will get a 2nd tier free agent CB with his true starter coming from the draft in Darqueze Dennard. The end.

Looks like we'll have close to 15mil when its all said and done. I think we had 10 as of today, and cutting Rogers would gain 5.

I'm still baffled on why the 49ers re-signed Dobbs at the number they did.

Would he take a 6 mil/yr contract? That's about how much he's worth.

There are some who won't command huge bucks...wily vets like Tillman, Eric Wright or younger guys like Nolan Carroll. Even Champ Bailey won't command a lot now that Denver's cut him. If Brown leaves, Baalke has to sign at least one vet...you can't just draft rookies for depth behind Brock & Culliver.

Why not? The Niners won a Super Bowl with two rookie corners and a rookie safety. In fact that secondary was the best in the league that year with 3 rookies and a second-year starter.

Great point. Also worth noting, Cully, Brock, and now Reid are all veterans - younger vets, but vets nonetheless. And if Whitner is back, even better, that's solid veteran presence. As mentioned above, I'm not sure why we NEED to replace Rogers with another over the hill CB...these guys don't need babysitting. I'm perfectly fine with embracing a youth movement.

It would be vey non-Baalke but what if....

What if along with cutting Rogers they let Brown walk; then sign Vontae Davis to start opposite Brock then sign Nolan Carroll to compete with Culliver for the nickel job? Morris of course would be the 5th CB still.

It's possible they dump Rogers and give his salary or maybe a little more to Vontae Davis. Maybe not likely, but definitely a possible scenario.

7 or 8 mil/yr seems a bit high for Vontae, but that's what it'll probably take to get him in here.

Because he's worth $1.4mil? He played 1/3 of the snaps on the DL last year and played well overall. That's a lot better than a guy like Dahl who's making 2/3 as much even after renegotiating his contract, and is just gonna ride the bench and play ST all year barring an injury.

And it's a bit meaningless really, especially with the cap increase this year. They can cut him before the season starts and it won't cost us anything. Worse/best case, they keep him around at reasonable backup money and have no long-term commitment to him after this season.

There just wasn't any downside to tendering a pretty reliable, versatile role player like Dobbs.
Well since they can cut Dobbs before the season with 0 cap hit he will have to play really well to earn his spot and 1.4 mil. We could draft a player in the mid to late rounds he could have to beat out or we cold just go with 7 DL and he gets cut.
