In the big picture, getting a stop and receiving the ball with worse field position is a better choice than gambling on defense and risking a big play when the gamble fails.

Getting the ball with worse field position also allows us to possess the ball longer, keep it away from the opposing offense, while also resting our defense.

In games where the offense has trouble staying on the field...this eventually hurts the defense as they get tired and wear down.

Teams also play more conservatively against good defenses.

This isn't rocket science.

2nd in the NFC, 4th in the NFL
