The Niners FO is obviously dedicated to doing things the way the Packers and Giants have over the years - develop through the draft and add less expensive free agents for key positions of need if they don't break the bank. The Seahawks have actually been working that way as well up until this last off-season when they changed their approach. We'll see how it works out for them. If it works out, they'll be the first team to be successful adding expensive free agents in quite some time.

Justin Smith was a big FA who broke the bank. Turned out fine.

Justin Smith was with the Niners for three years before they ever made the playoffs so bringing him in, as good as he is, didn't get them there. What expensive free agents have they brought in during the last three years when they were actually contenders? And, neither he or Carlos Rogers were expensive by the standards we see teams paying these days. Remember, Percy Harvin got a $60 million contract with over $15 million in potential dead money.

Sure! Because we've all seen how successful teams that spend big money on veteran free agents have been lately. Teams like that have won, what, maybe as many as zero championships? And again, a team's "window" is the career length of an elite QB paired with an elite Head Coach. If Kaepernick becomes an elite QB, the window will be open for quite a few years. The Packers, Patriots and Saints windows are still open. How long have those windows been open?

Agree with you. But that's a very big "if". He's nowhere near the level of the other three QBs right now and, personally, as much as I have been on his bandwagon, I have my doubts that he'll be the type of QB they are. His development seems stalled . . . good (could be very good) not great. We'll see.

You could make the case that he's doing a lot better than Brees was doing at a similar stage. And Rodgers was in a pass-happy offense. Taking that into consideration, he's at least in Rodgers territory at this stage. Tom Brady, during his first few years, had a higher interception ratio than Kaepernick has right now. I agree that it's too early to know if he will become elite, but it's not like he isn't showing the stuff he needs to get there. He throws very accurate long and medium range passes, he's very elusive in and out of the pocket and IMO he seems to be progressing nicely in recognizing defenses and going through reads.

We also dropped massive money on Nate Clements, Tully Banta-Cain and god knows who else during those years. Getting 1 success with Justin is expected when you throw money at 3-5 big name players.

The Bucs will get a return on investment in Revis if they stop using him in zone coverage but they screwed themselves over by throwing money at Goldson and the other players.

On offense Vincent Jackson has been exactly what you'd want or expect. a skilled veteran that makes crazy catches but is too slow to outrun DBs on his own. But when you don't have a QB to throw it to him you screw yourselves over again.

SOOOO HAPPY WE DON'T THROW MONEY AT PLAYERS.

We let Philly throw $100 Mill at Asomougha 3 years ago and now we have has washed up but knowledgeable a** on our team to pennies.

Glad we let him go for 3 yrs, 12 million. No way I'd trade for him at 4 mil a year. I think he is done. 10 tackles in 8 games yeah we made the right move letting him go.

Exactly. If we wanted him we would have resigned him at that. Why bring back someone we let go who got wayyyy overpaid.

and whether it was just posturing or not remains to be seen but every said they thought Ian Williams would prove to be a better player than RJF or Sopoaga -- Dorsey's play hasn't made me miss them either.

If we don't make a trade, what are we going to do with all of our draft picks?

Must mean that they're targeting a player in the draft and they want to make sure they have all the ammo possible if they need to trade up for him. HAS to be. No other reason they're sitting on all those draft picks. I hope they're targeting Sammy Watkins, the anti AJJ. It'll make holding out worth it and Baalke is usually on the money when he trades up for certain players (Kap, Reid, Aldon).
