wow... really surprised to see Justin rated #3 on this poll... I would think it would be obvious that behind the scenes it would be him.
he is one of the oldest players on our team that still plays at a elite level. I guess because you never see him doing post game shows, some might forget about him might be being THEE team leader.
honestly we do have many true Captains on this team....but I think Justin is the one who could get pissed off and grabs everyone's attention.
again honestly... if young players or new diva players tried to act up.. the likes of Justin, Ahmad, and maybe Bowman are the players that seem like they would kick a teammates ass.
I know Patrick, Vernon, Staley, all have mean streaks to them...but with other teammates.... I just don't see them being the first to swing. (well at least Saved Vernon 2.0....young Vernon, yeah he was a hot head)
I know everyone respects Gore the most...but I don't think they are intimidated by him.....also the likes of Carlo Rogers & Terrell Brown would get tossed like rag dolls.

I am going to guess that the players on the team do have a clue.
In September, the team selected its team captains.
The players elected Colin Kaepernick and re-elected Patrick Willis. They join Justin Smith who is an incumbent team captain.

I think the players would have gone with Kaep at the start of the season purely on the fact that he is the only QB these guys want to see on the field. Perhaps the players expected him to step up to the plate on that and had his play been better the last few weeks the captain stuff would just roll off that.
However his play hasn't been stellar so perhaps he's stepped back from that leadership role a little bit and is working out his own game. No one can argue that his confidence isn't quite there at the moment and he might not have been ready for the captaincy just yet.
This is where Frank has stepped up to help the young QB out. I have no doubt the players only meeting would have been instigated by Frank and possibly VD, Willis & Justin. These guys want to win, and win now!

I gotta admit, I wrote off Frank Gore, stupid mistake on my part. He is without a doubt, the LEADER of the 49ers team. As he goes, so goes the team. Check it out. I was just too stupid to realize it until the last 2 games.

Frank Gore reminds me so much of Emmitt Smith. I know we all hate Emmitt because he was a Cowgirl and a thorn in our side but Gore's game reminds me so much of Emmitt, which is a Good thing. I just wish Gore was a tad better in short yardage. But he definetly is the TEAM LEADER!!!!

They voted. The results of the vote are public. Justin Smith, Kaepernick, and Willis were elected.
I was not there when they voted. I do not know what they were thinking then or are thinking now.
That is my take on the thread.

I guess this goes back to your question "What exactly is a #1 true Captain?"
In a true & political sense Smith, Kaep & Willis won the election. However it's already been a long season for these guys & a lot has happened already. This is where Gore has taken the reins IMO to "Right the Ship".
As someone said earlier, perhaps the wrong question was asked in the thread title. Perhaps the question should have been "Who is the heart & soul of the team?" and then we can discuss who sings Kumbaya around the camp fire, lol..

Willis on defense. VD on offense. That's why they always lead the huddles before the game. It's pretty obvious.
Frank isn't a captain nor is he a leader. He just does what he does. And there's nothing wrong with that.

^^Yep, I'm with NickShay...
Vocal leaders are VD and Willis. To me, Justin and Frank are the lead by example type.

Voted for Justin, but can certainly see the arguement for Gire or VD or PW. All great players that lead in their own way.
Who voted for Crabtree?

My vote went to Willis. He sets the tone for this team's identity which is physicality. Gore is a close second.
