Is anyone else glad he's finally taking care of his issues? I feel like it's become a distraction to the team between the shooting incident and the DUI.

i disagree.
i really think it was because of this CBA thing... harbs would have wanted to play him and I guarentee jed would have made an executive decision and over ruled harbs and shipped aldon off yesterday... jed made the decision yesterday, swooped in and did that interview after the game.... lockers dont mysterious get emptied in the middle of a game. aldon probably knew hes off to rehab before the game as well.
I don't think this is tied to the CBA thing from what I've read.
I believe it would have been an issue if Harbaugh or York were looking to suspend Smith. But this wasn't reported as a "suspension." It should be on the NFI list, and I don't believe it would be regulated by the new CBA.
If I had to guess, it was probably a community decision beteween Smith, Harbaugh, and York. They could sit or NFI a star player and let him leave for treatment mid week when they are looking for a bounce back win after a tough loss the preceding week. Or they could let him play, give the team a chance to scan the wire for depth, work on game plan adjustments as necessary, and give the player a chance to help them out in the tough week before he has to leave for a prolonged period of time.
It's all speculation, but if this is the case, I don't see any issue with it. A player let his team down. This may have been an opportunity to help the team a little before he had to leave. It ultimately didn't work out, and now leaves the team and front office open to scrutiny, but nobody outside the organization can know for sure all that went into their decisions.
That being said, I will never understand NFL players. Just ignoring the drug and alcohol problems, there is absolutely no reason for any athlete to drive. Hell I've often said, any of these guys could hire some yahoo for $75,000/year to do nothing but be at their beckoned call and drive them anywhere they want to go.

They were saying there was a lot more things behind this decision than simply suspending Aldon. If we suspended him prior to the game, he was going to get paid for Sunday either way. There were also other small technical things that allowed for Aldon to play Sunday.
I think the 49ers did the right thing. As long as there is some sort of progress in helping Aldon rather than a simple punishment, then the decision is positive.

You can't keep everyone and given greater weaknesses in other areas you pick your poison. Saying we should have kept so and so in the off season is a joke. You sure like that IF word.

clearly the weed and alcohol made him the most productive pass rusher the past two seasons.
i say we let him continue to do it and turn the other cheek.

i was as hard as anyone on the team for getting rid of two backers but that is no longer valuable and i do not whine over players no longer here.. moving forward, do you think we will find a cheap free agent, not named higgins or haggins or huggins or whoever the f**k? i assume we make no move in regards to patricks injury,. maybe we just lose him for this thursday. we got lucky sunday that ray and his two bad ankles held up, i would still be in favor of trading one of our difference making 7th round picks for a d lineman.

I'm ok with how this went down. Regardless of whether he played or not the important thing is that he is taking steps to correct the situation and has expressed regret. I think he's being sincere. I'm glad that this is being handled appropriately. I didn't have a lot of confidence in this based on how the organization handled the whole Brooks thing.

Lemonier will get a chance to show his skills as long as he's next up on the depth chart. This is why we never should have gotten rid of Parys Haralson.

so since nobody addressed my question about him being allowed to play per the CBA... i did a little research via google... this still dosent answer my question as theyre just speculations but it seems the whole playing today because of the CBA thing might be true.

can someone please relay this to all the s**t talkers on .net saying were classless and shouldnt have let him play today to begin with.

id sign up and do it myself but ive got a business to run in 5 hours and need sleep.
The CBA does not require Aldon Smith to actually PLAY. The CBA prevents teams from punitively "suspending" a player according to all the rumors floating around.
The technical term "suspension" might mean something specific under the CBA (i.e., relating to forfeiting the game check etc.)
However, there are other managerial options available other than a "suspension." Every week players are deactivated. Every week players don't get in the game despite being active.
The 49ers clearly didn't fear the almighty CBA when Dobbs had his Fri drunken car crash last year. Dobbs didn't fly with the team to the game in STL.
