One play that deserves mention: Kaepernick flipped a perfectly placed pass to LaMichael James on a delayed screen to the right that would have gone for a huge gain in a real game. What made it work was the timing and the fact that right tackle Anthony Davis got 15 yards down field and blocked Dahl, who would have had an angle on James at the sideline.

That's great! That's an aspect of our game last year that we just didn't have. A deadly screen game would aid the PA passing game too!
Very encouraging...perhaps Roman reads the WZ! LOL

If I wanted roman to come into the web zone all I would have to do is draw a pentagram on the floor and chant "i summon thee" 3 times
lets see what he actually does in a game

Cam Johnson is going to have to do amazing things to win a spot this year. The team is so stacked.

NC, I don't care if it is a delayed screen,(altho that is a dandy), or shovel pass. I just want to see Ds try and take on LMJ out "there", in space. I don' think they can. The fact Kap and LMJ connected on one of those beauties, hopefully somehow gets embedded in roman's or Coach's brain. You know they won't forget that play. I like our O better already.

Pas,
Agreed...it's encouraging they are considering James more in the mix with Hunter back as the off-Tackle runner. They "need" to find additional ways to get him the ball out in space and the screen is the perfect play for him and running him out of the Q-formation (of course).
All,
Tons of updates to post #1! Let me know if I missed anything/anyone/any move. Slightly updated my 53 on page 17, post #245

Updated...along with the 53 Roster. Welcome CB Eric Wright! Get healthy...
PS: Imagine when all these guys get healthy down the stretch: Crabtree, Manningham, Hunter, Dial, Carradine, Wright, etc. Wow!

Right now it would be hard to rate our STRONG CORNERS, all 4 of them. Reid tackles well, Cox played great, and honestly I really couldn't tell much about anyone else.
WRs, Collie looked like a legit starter, Chad Hall is quick and good hands, and Lockette is a rocket, altho he got held twice. Moore dropped one, caught one, AJ looks like he is afraid of getting cut( he won't because AB says so, and he is right), and Patton I never even saw.
Lemonier is definitely a keeper, can't rate Qbs wth no OL passblocking. Next game, 1st string is going to have to play long enough so we can see 13 guys get good passes and then rate them. Not tonite tho. Cox is another keeper and Vance is headed for big time. Good ball catchers right now are
Anquan, Vernon, vance, collie, chad hall. Others need passes with 1st string OL in. Can our 2nd string OL really be that bad? wow.

Still lots of questions thus far...many already answered...some issues not address/resolved. I updated the OP with the updates on our team needs. Missing any? I didn't even mention backup QB (original fail on my part)...
Interests/Needs (in order of importance IMHO) - Rationale: This is what I had after the FA signings and coming into the draft and this is where we are at after PreSeason Game 2. These were my priorities in order of importance (check post #1 for more details):
Ring #6 - Duh...we're working on this one and like one draft prognosticator said, "...Baalke is building a dynasty!"
Top Tier T - We needed a "swing T" so we got three: Carter Bykowski, Luke Marquardt and we brought back Adam Snyder. That said, Marquardt is hurt, Bykowski is weak and NOBODY wants Snyder to be the backside blocker for CK. Worse off, if there is another injury to Staley, we may have to mess with the chemistry along the entire OL and move Boone from G to T (not easy on the fly) and insert someone else at RG (2 of 5 positions). This is NOT good.
Top Tier Cover SS (may need a SS as well) - It's safe to say the FO got their man in Reid. Dahl seems like a viable backup at both SS/FS and will also help on ST. That said, Whitner still can't cover in the RZ (esp.) so scheme will have to be the theme for 2013 here. Spillman? Robinson, like Dahl and Whitner are short and don't add much.
Top Kickoff Coverage Unit/Ace K-Punt Returner - Once again, despite speedsters in Morris, Moore, Osgood, Lockette, Dixon, etc. getting there early, not always do they make the tackle and as a result, we continue to get torched for huge plays, even in pre season. Cox has looked way better than James but nobody would classify him as dynamic/electric and nobody fears him taking it to the house every time he touches the ball (like do against every team we face, it seems).
Top Tier TE - Roman got HIS man in Vance McDonald. Team also brought in MarQueis Gray as a project as well. I originally had VD, McDonald and Gray (H-back) making the team with Celek getting cut. We are on par with that but Celek is not a poor player and we could end up keeping 4 TE's at the expense of the WR group.
Top or Second Tier DE - Tomsula just had Christmas with getting Cornellius Carradine, Quinton Dial and a major project in Lawrence Okoye. That said, Tank and Dial will most likely be red-shirted this year and Okoye still has a long ways to go. Fortunately, Dobbs continues to impress and Dorsey can play DE and NT behind Ian Williams. McDonald and Smith are healthy.
Top or Second Tier CB - Only Picking up Marcus Cooper screams to me, "SCHEME is the THEME!" Look for bigger, stronger, taller more physical starting CB's this year to play press more and perhaps, all across the DB lineup. Look for our shiftier CB's (esp. Brown) to move into the slot to cover the micro-talented WR's of Harvin (done) and Austin. Darryl Morris has a real shot here! Cooper seems to play very disciplined in the games (smart, mature) and Morris has made some big splashes in practices and has epic speed and great coverage on deep balls. Rogers is still OK (still loses battles) but Nnamdi and Cox have both looked tremendous and Brock has looked good as well. Obviously, the pass rush has allowed them to play with the WR's in front of them and plays much more aggressively.
Top or Second Tier NT - Well, let's be real here, passing up every single NT in the draft tells me, "SCHEME is the new THEME in 2013!" Look for many more 4-man DL and inside and outside pass rushers. Boy, hasn't THIS become true thus far. Even Okoye has lined up outside DE and inside DT. And with Lemonier, Haralson back to form and new-comer, Skuta, we're golden at OLB. Second Tier WR - Seriously? With AJ red-shirted last year, we're about to see his skill set and THEN we added Patton as well to the mix? Bring it! OK, this has been a disaster thus far d/t Crabtree's injury and a whole lot of players vying for a few positions. Adding complication is the poor play by the backup QB's, receivers not "featured" like McDonald was the first game and the backup OL being horrendous. We STILL have no idea what we have...or if we have anything at all outside of Boldin. We have the Z position locked down but not sure who could backup Boldin outside. At the X position, Jenkins got pwned by Sean Smith (expected) and Lockette/Osgood haven't had many opportunities. For now, it appears Moore is the man there (behind or with Williams). At slot, you have about a dozen players to choose from. Crabtree is done for the year most likely and Manningham will be on PUP until week 6. Good thing we have a ton of TE's (listed) including another x-factor in Daniels who can play multiple positions.
Second Tier C - Patrick Omameh and Sherman Carter were added to compete with our red-shirted Looney and Kilgore (but both stink). Do we have a potential cut of Goodwin here? If not he'll most likely have to restructure but make no mistake about it he's in a dog fight to start now. So far, Kilgore seems to be the man here with Goodwin just now coming back and Looney working at G and backup C.
Second Tier OLB - Corey Lemonier was added as an Ahmad Brooks (check that, Aldon Smith) clone. Haralson, Lemonier and Skuta have been off-the-charts good. Second Tier ILB - Welp, safe to say we found our backup ILB's in Wilhoite and Moody!

Spot on assessment NCommand!
Looney seemed very unimpressive last night.
Totally agree, we need an OT backup who can play. I'm thinking Jamal Brown as a FA and let our coaching staff groom one or two of the guys on the farm team.
I've been VERY critical of Dobbs and Tuk in the past BUT Dobbs has really stepped up.
We're solid w/Dawson and Lee - do we have anyone else in case of emergency?
Thanks

Yes, it's sad that he is doing well but others are doing better! Guy can't get a break. But he is good enough to catch on somewhere if not here.

Agreed, it's too bad. Lemonier, Haralson and Skuta (who can play OLB and ILB/ST ace) are locks. And even if we wanted to keep Cam at OLB and move Skuta to ILB, we can't afford to lose our pre season MVP's in Wilhoite and Moody there.
So yeah...good for us but I had him originally making the squad this year over Haralson b/c I felt he could have a higher ceiling, provide more pass rush and be better in coverage (plus younger and cheaper) BUT Haralson has played very well and brings intangibles (team guy, the players/coaches love him).

Thanks Vegas. I'm sad to say after this second game, I'm MORE confused about the WR positions and overall, didn't learn anything new about other positions. 2 more games.

The good news is that the coaches likely care less about the preseason games than the practices. It's hard to judge a WR when a back up QB is running for their lives! In practice they can see how the guy does off the line, with CK tossing the ball, and against our DBs, who are pretty good. Some guys do really well in confused preseason situation...ad-libbing. But others need the play to work like it does in practice...doesn't necessarily tell us who will be better once games are for real. In other words, I doubt the coaching staff is as confused as we are!
