Our secondary is more than fine with Justin and Aldon healthy. It's all Justin and Aldon. No pass rush the last 6 games.

I tend to agree.

Still want to replace Whitner with a rookie that has rabge to cover. He can't cover at all and the ravens knew it.

I think Culliver needs to be replaced because every game there's a long throw and he just can't find the ball and make a play for it and I'm a little iffy about Rodgers. But, adding a couple large defensive tackles for depth and to help crush the pocket will do wonders for our pass rush which is the key. A lot of those big plays just don't happen if there is more pressure on the QB. Harelson will be back next season and there are a number of big, nasty D-linemen available in the draft. I'd like to see them use a few picks to move up a little and make sure they can take Jesse Williams, who is a 6-3, 320 D-tackle who reportedly has a non-stop motor. There are a bunch of corners in the second to fourth rounds, some of whom are pretty tall. Two main things will happen this off season: 1. They'll build the defense around Kaepernick, and 2. They'll heavily tweak their defense in the draft and free agency.

I think we can cut Whitner and Rodgers, they were signed to be stop gaps and now we have Culliver (WHo had a bad game), that is better than Rodgers and is getting better, and we have enough draft picks to replace Whitner. Keep Goldson and pair him with a rookie like Rambo or McDonald.

I remember a quote from an announcer a long time ago, I believe it was when the Vikings had Millard and Doleman. He said when a completion is within 3 seconds, its the DBs fault, if a completion is 4 seconds and after, it's the pass rushers fault.
I didn't watch the game again, too sad to, but I recall that Baltimore's TEs were getting a lot of quick strikes. So maybe safety coverage is an issue, along with Justin's injury and Aldons injury?/ineffectiveness.

Whitner is worse in coverage IMO. Goldson gets grief here on the WZ but if you look at those plays in particular in Atlanta those were blown assignments. Could be the CB too. Goldson is good when he's on his man. We saw on the deep middle ball vs. the Jets. Goldson can cover deep when there aren't blown assignments. Whitner concerns me. He's a step slow and he's shorter with shorter arms. Not enough reach for coverage.

The Pitta TD: Pitta pused Whitner a bit and turned and stood there, Whitner was out of the play and didn't even try and get back in the play. I thought Willis could have dove and meybe tipped it, but that was on Whitner.

Management isn't going to use 7M of cap space on a backup QB. Nor should they.

More depth on the D line.
A big nasty non-stop motor D Tackle to start grooming as a replacement for J. Smith
A couple new cornerbacks
Another safety
A big-legged kicker who's not a head-case.

A lot of players play hurt though. Aldon was hurt and Justin was injured. Really no excuse for Aldon's play. I mean so what is supposed to happen when Smith retires? Do they just retire Aldon too? The guy just disappeared and flat out not getting it done. He has to play better with or without Justin. And they aren't the only 2 guys on the defense getting paid. Only big plays Brooks keeps making are off sides to prolong drives. Raymac and Soap weren't nearly as disruptive as they were last year. And i wonder if the staff either doesn't believe in rotating guys in the front 7 or that the staff thinks the back ups just aren't up to par? Gotta give these guys some relief during the season. The defense didn't seem to play aggressive this year like they did last year. It was more passive. Need to attack. Last year the corners could take more risks and play tighter coverage b/c the pass rush was getting home.
As far as the secondary they are all average players. Nobody is special back there. Goldson started the season making a case to be special but tailed off. Whitner's coverage skills have always been terrible. When he was brought here he was known for being the worst coverage safety in the league. You get what you pay for. He needs to be released. Need some youth and speed back there. I'm not sure Cully is really a corner anymore the way he got abused. His technique is horrible, and he just can't locate the ball. Might need a new secondary coach. They need corners who play the ball.

The pass rush was lacking, however I am not concerned about Aldon's potential or his future. Adding some depth at OLB, to take some snaps from Aldon (Parys Haralson coming back will be big) and adding a situational pass rusher in the draft will be big. Obviously we need to find an heir apparent and someone who can spell Cowboy throughout the season. Riding 13 players for 90+% of the snaps just isn't going to be a formula that equals a dominant defense in the post-season. Depth in the front 7 is the biggest concern for the defense.
That said, I thought it was clear watching the game (which I did from a seat in the Super Dome, so my perspective was iffy) that Whitner was the weak link. I love the passion he plays with and how he hits, but no starter on defense allows offenses to find continual success against them as Whitner does. He is a liability in the pass game. Goldson too, is not the best in coverage, though he is much better and can ball-hawk. I am a fan of cutting Whitner (barring a huge cap-hit, I don't know what his cap situation is) and paying Goldson long-term. I'd like to see Goldson move over to strong safety (I know Fangio claims they are interchangeable but Whitner tends to play more of a strong safety role) where he can be more aggressive against the run without being a major liability in coverage, and can force turnovers with his big hits. I'd love to see the 9ers draft David Amerson of NC State for a move to FS. He is a known ball-hawk, but there are concerns about his hip movement and ability to cover agile WRs. But he has the length to cover less agile, big bodied TEs (he's 6-3) and has hands like a WR. He would team up with Goldson to provide two guys who can create turnovers. We'd lose a bit in the run/big hits game, but I think we'd gain huge in terms of pass defense.

im thinking of letting Dashon go. We need the coin to resign our important players. Could Cully play FS and Whitner play SS?

^^ I agree with you on Whitner. He's a good run defender, but just doesn't have the ability to cover or make many plays in the passing game, and was obviously targeted by opposing offenses down the stretch. If there was one move I'd definitely make, it would be to replace him.

With a better defensive, we aren't down 17-0 in a NFC championship game and aren't down 21-6 in a Super Bowl.
