This is a thread discussing Alex Smith, not arguing about hypothetical scenarios about who would get more money. An argument that would have negative consequences I might add.

That train has left the station.

This is an unwinnable battle. Can't talk about just one considering the unique situation we have here.

Ain't nothing unique about people b*tching about AS and comparing the difference between him and Kaep which has nothing to do with this thread.

Unique situation?

We have a starting quarterback and one on the bench. How exactly is that a unique situation? You want to talk about Smith and how warm he is getting the bench then fine, talk about it.

Hypothetical situations that will eventually turn into arguments will get this thread locked for the 47th time.

Then we need a QB thread or no Alex Smith thread at all because there's only a few reasons to discuss the backup QB and most those reason are directly linked to comparing him to the starter, especially in the 49ers situation. There is rarely a media interview that does not brim up both. It is mentioned in every game cast. It will be mentioned in the playoffs.
Only a few months left, and this thread will FINALLY be gone for good.

Even if this gets wide circulation, the myth that Alex has a noodle arm will live on. Many of us have been posting such deep ball statistical comparisons for years, and they're always ignored, dismissed, forgotten. Alex's deep ball also improved a lot over the course of the 2011 season. He had a great stretch from that Rams game when he threw a 50-yarder to Crabs (and another perfect deep ball that VD dropped in the end zone), to the deep sideline pass to Crabs in Seattle that set up the game-winning fg and then of course to his numerous bombs to VD in the playoffs. So people who claim Alex is just a game manager with no big play ability are only exposing their own ignorance. I'm excited for him to hopefully get a chance to play for an offensive-minded coach who is aggressive and will let him throw 30-35 times a game.

Except Kaep has done this in 5 starts which proves that we're pushing the ball downfield more with Kaep

No one ever said otherwise. The point is people continually claim Alex can't or won't make these throws at all, yet he's done so successfully repeatedly, especially in the playoffs.

No one said he can't or won't make deep throws. Alex can't or won't make the tight deep throws or the ones where the WR IS actually covered but the ball placement gets the completion. His accuracy is also slightly off on most of those throws. Now consider the fact that teams gear to stop gore vs Alex.

wrong---look at the lions game this year....he placed a ball over the db and into davis hands on a long pass downfield and davis dropped it.....look at the pass to crabtree to set up the winning field goal in last years game vs seahawks in seattle, hitting crabtree who was doubled

You can't take rare spots as being able to or wanting to do it. Too few and far in between. Harbaugh's or was it Roman's quote acknowledged this the best when they said they don't have to call plays for Colin.

This, to me, meant the plays had to get the WR's open for the most part for Alex. He doesn't have the accuracy and arm strength to make a lot of plays we need to make vs good coverage teams that want to stack the box.

You are really stretching! You bring something up and say Alex cannot do it, then someone points out that he has and you say yeah but. Common man, if its there its there. We can all place these petty little restrictions and the like on any player to fit what we might want to believe but it doesn't take away from the facts.

Too many Niner fans and supposedly rational analysts still have it in their minds that Alex is limited. This is all based on the years previous to Jim getting here. If you cannot accept what Alex has done with good coaching and better players than thats on you and them. It doesn't make it true though.

And for gods sake man, Alex was ripping along at a 70 percentage completion rate so what the f__k are you talking about accuracy? Did the plays/wr's not only get open for Alex but also toss the ball to themselfs? This is just insane.

This is why I long ago stopped responding to that person's posts. If we had an ignore option here, I'd put it to good use.

Who is the majority of the league? Alex Smith and his completion percentage will be highly coveted. Teams don't ignore those figures unless they've already got somebody that's doing that well or better. The whole thing rests on when the Niners release him and if he wants to go to the team to which he's traded. Smith's made every kind of throw required of him, even deep passes to Crabtree. Sometimes it's about what the defense gives a QB, not whether he can make the throw.
