Many false comparisons and competitions arise in these threads and CK starting seems one of the least likely. I'm sure Harbaugh and all will make a better decision than I would though.

CK may well have potential, but that remains to be realised. And Smith, under Harbaugh, will himself continue to improve.
Interesting times ahead.
+ 1... and to the bolded, I'd add that there really isn't any pressure I can see on the F/O to insert Ck7. He is getting paid 1.2 and then 1.5 million in the following two years of his deal. That is not a pressure-cooker for the F/O at all. We also have shown that we are unafraid to dump 2nd round picks (Taylor Mays). We are a strong enough team that we don't have to shed a tear over a "missed" draft pick. If Alex continues to play as he does... then I think Ck7 will be on the trade block for his final year (2014).. unless he grumbles too much earlier (if he doesn't start in 2013) or he is quiet and accepts his backup role throughout.

So wait a minute, let me get this straight. In your view we keep them both and let them compete pre next season? Sounds good. And you say Smith wins? That's possible.
Then I lose you. You say in the last year of their contracts we let CK take over. No competition, we just bounce the starting qb who beat him out in 2013 and force in CK regardless. Well, that just does not make sense.

agree with english. I do not get posters who claim it is a fact that ck will be the quarterback of the future. really what do you base that upon???When i ask them what this is based upon, I get either a muted or confused response. They usually refer to some ceiling alex has supposedly reached.alex beat out ck for the job this year and if does it again next year and we have a third solid winning season in a row why would you jettison alex in favor of ck ? the words "people who only have a deep seeded hatred of alex from day one" just want to leap off the keyboard and onto print but i will restrain myself for the sake of harmony and togetherness here on the zone,,, but english brings up a very good point that I would like explained to me

how he handles it is a key as you said. we know that JH has no time for whiners (jacobs may be about to see that) . i still maintain that at the time coach had to draft ck cuz he did not know what he had with alex and I believe had he known then what he knows now about alex he never would have made that deal. can i prove it? no. can some people here prove ck is going to be the quarterback next year? no.

Can you prove Alex will be the qb here next year? No. Not anymore than the person that wants Kaep as the starter and says he will be next year. No one outside of the 49ers organization knows and I'm pretty sure they don't have a clear cut answer just yet, with only half the season gone. Alex is doing a commendable job right now, even with the bad games included. Kaep is the backup and probable qb of the future. How soon that future is or if it ever happens depends on the play of Alex. Let's let the season play out then everyone will have a better idea. Until then can we please quit hating on a player who hasn't had a chance to win or lose any games?

not hataing on ck,, just would like to know proof that ck is the "probable" quarterback of the future,, you talk as if this is set in stone,, its not. i think the so called hating of ck will stop as soon as some posters stop acting like it is a sure thing ck is going to be the quarterback next year. you even did it yourself with your use of the word probable. where is your proof

It goes both ways. Where is your proof? Is Alex being the starter or even here set in stone? No it isn't!!! As soon as certain posters(not just you) get their emotions in check they will realize NOTHING in professional sports is set in stone. I have seen waaaaaay better qbs/players than Alex, here and on other teams get let go. It broke my heart to see Joe Montana leave here in favor of Steve Young, but it taught me at a young age that the NFL is a business(money before loyalty). To think it is out of the realm of possibility is just pure naivete. Also did you read the part of my post that said "how soon that future is or if it ever happens is up to the play of Alex"?

You keep him until his contract expires.
If during the final year of his contract someone offers a tremendous deal, yeah move him, but in all reality that will probally only happen if Smith gets hurt and Kaep excels.

We will see how the season goes and the upcoming offseason goes, odds will not be a factor at all. Alex's improvement and Kaep's improvement/readiness will decide what happens.

I don't think Alex has to become injured for Kaep to get a shot and excel. If there is a true open competition for the qb position next year, Harbaugh will make the appropriate decision for the team. Either way some fans won't agree with Harbaugh's decision, just the nature of the zone.

The odds are that Smith will continue to improve and play winning football and that CK will continue to keep a neat clip board. No dissing CK just going with the facts as they are.

The only fact is Alex is the starter right now, everything else is just speculation and opinions. It's silly to think that only Alex will improve I've seen huge improvement in Kaep from one pre season to the next. Harbaugh is good at developing qbs, he has proved that throughout his coaching career. Why would it be any different with Kaep? I'm not saying Kaep will or won't take over next year, I'm just arguing with those who think it entirely impossible.

I read a lot of draft guides that Kaep would be a 2-3 year project, that has the potential to be a franchise type of qb. I think he got drafted to the best team possible to realize that potential. We have everything in place for him to succeed, unlike it was when Alex was drafted.

Let Kap marinate a couple more years. He's on track to take over once Alexs' contract is up if not sooner.
