Our front seven will force QBs into bad throws and Carlos (and Brown) is good enough to stick with WRs and capitalize on mistakes. Carlos isn't a shutdown CB, but we generate enough pressure on defense that we don't need that.
I wouldn't expect his Int total to rise though. That's not really his game; although, last season he broke out and hung on to a few more. I'll back Brown and guess that he'll lead the team (hopefully the league) in Ints. Culliver is the guy to watch. I admit I hated the pick, but he's the most athletic DB on the roster and probably has the best hands in the secondary. He should get on the field enough to exploit some #3 / #4 WRs and get 4 or 5 picks.

will C. Rogers return to his old form?

A large portion of Rogers' picks last year came from gambling and undercutting routes when in favorable field position. Our whole D tended toward this high risk/reward style when we had yards to play with, and of all our DBs Rogers is the best at reading the route and gambling. On these types of plays Rogers catches the ball fine. With the Skins it was usually when he was surprised on unpredictable stuff (overthrown balls, juggled catches, etc.) that his hands were bad

Carlos performed great last year because the Defense was great, so I think you have to look deeper to see if the defense will regress.
Week by week Qbs 49ers face:
Rodgers
Stafford
Ponder
Sanchez
Fitzpatrick
E. Manning
Flynn
Kolb/Skelton
Bradford
Cutler
Brees
Bradford
Tannehill
Brady
Flynn
Kolb/Skelton
Tougher Qbs than last year, but still only 5 that are really good: Brady, Brees, Manning, Rodgers and Stafford. The rest are average to scrub. Cutler is good, but he was absolutely embarassed the last time he came to Candlestick. Flynn is unproven and will have a tough time against this D. The only quality teams they face next year who have any chance of running the ball are the Bears and maybe the Seahawks the Bills. Adrian Peterson will not be healthy enough to do any damage, and the Rams are not good enough yet to threaten. Teams are going to pass and pass and pass some more, this give Rogers and the rest of the D more opportunity for picks, which they will certainly capitalize on. Rogers was always a good CB, that was never the knock on him, just balls would bounce off his hands. I think the added experience of the Defense in the system, the growth of Culliver and addition of Cox will mean a better pass D than a year ago, which means good things for Rogers.

I don't understand it. Injuries are part of the game and we are at no more risk than any other franchise yet we seem to be the only club that can't sustain success from the season before. Its starting to piss me off.
in every else's eyes it's been a decade of poor to below average play vs one good year......
whatever though, it's good motivation for harbs and co.

Exactly.
Goldson & Rogers are prime examples - both basically doubled their career INT marks in a single season. This year's schedule also includes much better opposing offenses.
Its not hard to see why some are predicting a drop off, but I'd rather see a defense fighting to prove itself than one buying into its own hype.

B/c they have been consistent and been in contention for a playoff birth for the last several years. Really not hard to understand. If the Niners are this good over a prolonged period then they will earn that same benefit of the doubt as those teams you mentioned.

i honestly have been waiting for this Jets matchup
a couple years ago didnt rex ryan say he wishes they played us that year.
when we werent so good and he swore they were the superbowl champs?
Edit:
about the supposed tampering
"I think it's ridiculous, personally," Ryan said on ESPN Radio's "Mike and Mike" show. "I wish we were playing them."
