how do u know he was a project..?
I bet that if we had drafted Dalton with the same pick (I know he was not available) u would probably be saying the same thing about him, and we all know he's not.
Reasons Alex Smith was a "project":
--Played in a small conference (MWC)
--Played in a "gimmick" offense, may lack mechanics to run a pro system (Urban Meyer's spread option)... Alex Smith footwork 2005....
--Stats are inflated due to system.
Kapernick....
--Played in a small conference (WAC)
--Played in a gimmick offense (Nevada's pistol), mechanics.....
--Stats are inflated due to system (more so rushing in CK's case)
What's so hard for you to comprehend? It is a very clear statement. You think Colin is better qualified to start than Smith? And no Dalton was not a project, plus the Bengals had no better option than to start him, but Dalton at this point in his career is a better qb than Colin.

He'll be fine. He looked fine last preseason, so a few rough practices doesn't worry me much. He has the talent to play in the league, so I'm comfortable that Harbaugh can get him ready to get on the field. Smith signed his deal, so it buys Kaep/Tolzien/JJ atleast another year. I'm not worried. I think any of our backups could run our offense. It's very conservative and QB-friendly.

I think for the most part that's true. The disconcerting part is none of these guys have extensive experience playing under center from which most of the offensive, west coast plays come out of. Alex Smith had his knocks trying to play under center and drop backs early on, but he has been very good for the last 3-4 years. They may have to limit some of the plays called because of the lack of experience for the backups. I just don't see the offense being run smoothly like it would be with Smith. Not at this point. Maybe 2013 for the backups.
I'm waiting for some people to put a knock on Kaep for not being able to play under center like they did with Alex Smith.

Can't criticize what you don't see?! During preseason I would hope all QBs play lights out and then many on here will be calling for their favorite to start! I'll continue to leave it up to Harbaugh. Love having talent at the position as opposed number of years when rejects were brought in to compete with Smith.

I thought that was just the coaches' way of catering to Smith's #1 pick status...

When Nolan and Martz brought in JTO in 2008... that was when ... whatever status meant something for Alex... went out the window. From that 2nd surgery on, Alex was not and should not have been linked to being that # 1 overall pick anymore.
Very much looking forward to seeing the backup QBs in TC and preseason... wish I could be put in a coma for the next 30 days!
(some of you would sure sign up to help me with that wish, lolz)

Putting you in a coma is really easy. It's usually the waking up that's a bit tricky. Sometime never... Don't want you to miss the 2012 SB season there.

Alex is a serviceable guy and he's a great fit for what Harbaugh wants; however, I've never had the feeling that Alex was a special player.
