One more thing, for those who hope we keep 5 WRs active on game days is unlikely. We are a running team first, Alex Smith, all though he can win, he isn't a passing elite QB, he is mainly a game manager. I don't see us going down field or passing 40 times a game, we won with great defense and great running game.

When it comes to game days, it's Moss, Crabtree and Manningham with Ginn as returner.
Any who thinks KW will get cut is on crack... He is probably our 3rd best WR if not, then 4th... for sure over Ginn and AJ. Thinking KW gets cut is laughable... and is a HATER.

QB(3)- 11 Alex Smith, 7 Colin Kaepernick, 1 Josh Johnson
RB(4)- 21 Frank Gore, 32 Kendall Hunter, 45 Brandon Jacobs, 23 LaMichael James
FB(1)- 49 Bruce Miller
WR(6)- 84 Randy Moss, 15 Michael Crabtree, 14 Mario Manningham, 19 Ted Ginn Jr., 10 Kyle Williams, 17 A.J. Jenkins
TE(2)- 85 Vernon Davis, 46 Delanie Walker
C(2)- 59 Jonathan Goodwin, 62 Jason Slowey
OG(3)- 77 Mike Iupati, 67 Daniel Kilgore, Leonard Davis
OT(2)- 74 Joe Staley, 76 Anthony Davis
Swing OL(2)- 75 Alex Boone, 78 Mike Person

DE(4)- 94 Justin Smith, 91 Ray McDonald, 92 Will Tukuafu, 96 Demarcus Dobbs
NT(2)- 90 Isaac Sopoaga, 95 Ricky Jean Francois
OLB(4)- 55 Ahmad Brooks, 99 Aldon Smith, 98 Parys Haralson, 50 Cam Johnson
ILB(4)- 52 Patrick Willis, 53 NaVorro Bowman, 54 Larry Grant, 56 Tavares Gooden
CB(5)- 22 Carlos Rogers, 25 Tarell Brown, 29 Chris Culliver, 32 Darcel McBath, 20 Perrish Cox
S(4)- 38 Dashon Goldson, 31 Donte Whitner, 27 C.J. Spillman, 30 Trenton Robinson

PK(1)- 2 David Akers
P(1)- 4 Andy Lee
LS(1)- 86 Brian Jennings
ST(2)- 28 Rock Cartwright, 43 Colin Jones

PUP(1)- 66 Joe Looney
IR(1)- 58 Darius Fleming

Inactives(7)- QB Johnson, WR Williams, WR Jenkins, C Slowey, OT Person, CB Cox, S Robinson

Some notes- If we keep 6 WRs, then I can't see Williams active. Who does he stay over, the team feels special teams is high priority, and Jones and Rock are great at it, plus we are a running team, so we keep the 4 RBs active.

I kept 2 TEs due to Dobbs being able to play on offense.

I debated whether to carry Slowey or Ian Williams, hard choice, went with extra OL, with Looney on PUP to begin season.

I went with McBath over Brock as he brings more versatility as a CB and FS, plus better on Special Teams.

OLB wise, I am torn as cap wise we are tight, so Haralson is a tough guy, either we have him take pay cut or cut him, I expect a pay cut.

+1
i think we have a napalm condundrm ahead of us

i think there might be a chance(if someone shows promise in return game- cox already has some experiance KW showed flashes however needs to learn basics) we will cut ginn and keep napalm

I agree with everything but the McBath over Brock. I do not see us letting him go but you never know.
I think it's so annoying that Cartwright is likely to make the team over Dixon. Cartwright is solely a special teamer yet Dixon was a key cog on our amazing special teams last year, he's nearly 8 years younger, and he can make more of an impact on offense if necessary than Cartwright can. Really confusing.

If Williams proves to be a top 3 WR then fine let him play, but the team is a run first team, and won't carry 5 WRs active on game days, didn't do so in 2011, so who is inactive for Williams? If Moss and Manningham prove they are worth it, and Manningham is guaranteed money this year. Ginn isn't being inactive, he is our returner, and best one on the team.

Few guys that may not make the team, but think the Niners really like,
I could see these guys getting an "Injury" and protected on IR, or maybe even make the 53

RB- P.Hampton, short yardage/goal line type back, who could take over Jacobs role in 2013

DL- T.Jerod-Eddie, good 3-4 end project that can also play inside in 4 man fronts, I think he may have more upside then
Dobbs or Tuku, and much better size then either, has college experience in the 3-4

WR- N.Palmer, showing his stuff in camp, great hands, speed and agility, has potential as return specialist

Trade Ginn for Napalm....don't know if I want to do that. I'm rooting for NaPalm though. If he keeps showing more along the way, the team should try to keep him on anyway they could. Have Harbaugh interrupts a presser to say NaPalm sucks, has a calf injury like Crabtree with indefinite recovery time-- then put him on the practice squad.

moss is still our only deep threat atm

napalm seemes like a deep threat who has a great double fake which is absolutely deadly i think we may go with 6 WR this year (moss crabtree manningham aj jenkins are locks then after that ginn KW and napalm will fight for 2 spots)

i think its way to risky to put him on PS he seems like the real deal and clearly more talented than any WR we had last year at the end of the season not named crabtree

My annoyance is right there with yours. Jacobs (not a special teamer) has yet to prove his worth over Dixon let alone Cartwright.

The coaches seem to be working out several returners. That might suggest that Ginn's place as solely a returner is not secure.

its up to dixon whether or not its him or jacobs. cartwright is staying,, captain of special teams i believe, good return man in a pinch, good fullback in a pinch plus a great great locker room vet. i hope dixon makes it cuz he is younger than jacobs and can do special teams but if he turns out to be the same runner this pre season as he was last year, he is gone, jacobs stays and dixon has only himself to blame stop with reading alot into working out alot of returners. we saw what occured when ginn went down last year and i am sure the coaches want to have backups on top of backups in this area. there are nice reports of ginn in practice in regards to catching some balls so that is all good news
How, exactly, did Tolz slip from most able to come in and immediately take over for alex to PS (assuming he qualifies for PS...i thot that was only good for 1st yr , so maybe I'm wrong). I know Kap was our 2nd pick, and has tons of potential. I know JJ has history with coach H. But did Tolz really backslide to 4th Qb or did salaries, potential, former history(JJ), end up demoting our most NFL ready QB last yr?

Notable Cuts

Rock Cartwright- No value outside of ST and we keep Gooden, Flemming, and Cam Johnson who provide both ST and valuable backup ability. OLB is one of the most important depth positions because a well rested pass rush is a much more effective pass rush

Josh Johnson (I think Tolzien will prove too good in preseason to cut for a young guy and Kaepernick will not prove solid enough as the future franchise but we stay committed to his development, thus making Josh Johnson the odd man out as he doesn't wow enough for a player in his 5th NFL seasn)

I agree with your QB analysis. It does not make sense to place Josh Johnson at 3rd string when he has more game time experience and experience overall than Kaepernick. Its not often 1st and 2nd stringers go down during a single season so 3rd string is generally a spot for a developing QB such as Tolzien. Josh Johnson was brought in to compete and challenge A. Smith and if he does not end up displacing Kaep, then he is cut. Tolzien MUST continue to develop proficiently in order for my argument to remain cogent.

rock stays, great vetern multi tasker, soon to be named capt of special teams, plus back up fullback and kick returner. people really underestimate the reason why he was signed and what he will bring to the table, in my opinion
