Simply put, defense wins championships. Garcia, behind a top notch defense, would've been able to lead this team a lot farther. We were destroyed by a team with a good defense (Tampa). Our defense was middle of the pack while Garcia was around, ranking 13th and 14th, but worse in points allowed for most of his time here.
I'm not so sure about that. Our defense overall was terrible during that era (1999-2003), but this was more about the team being prepared for Young's successor. You could say that the team was not very well prepared to transition period, in the same way that new players were brought in to continue winning into the 1990s. I don't see the 49ers doing much beyond what they did do in most beyond those seasons. Even with a better defense, we wouldn't have beaten the Rams, Ravens, or Bucs during that time frame.

I'll add, Young is a horrible NFL analyst, I still love Steve Young doe.
How is Young horrible? Hes one of the few who dont make fools of themselves on TV trying to be opinionated.

Sorry man I just dont agree with half the things he says. If not making a fool of yourself makes him a good analyst, then that is your opinion.

1997: Bill Walsh (advisor) wanted us to get Jake Plummer....Policy & Dwight Clark instead choose Jim Druckenmiller
1999: Bill Walsh (now back as GM) signs Jeff Garcia from CFL; Steve Young's last year
2000: Had two chances to draft Tom Brady; pick Gio Carmazzi & Tim Rattay instead (Terry Donahue's call?)

BubbaParisMVP is about right. We kept trying to fix the aging defense with big FA signings which ended up wasting huge cap dollars (dead cap dollars no less after the players were cut) on players like DT Gabe Wilkens from GB and CB Antonio Langham.
Young was still very effective, but the talent around him was in decline. It almost seemed like the rest of the team played okay, but they really just expected (the players I mean) for Young and Rice (Brent Jones and Hearst to a lesser degree) to pull out some great plays to win games.
Young's concussion from the Aneas Williams blitz (AZ safety) that blew by RB Phillips (who was subsequently cut) was pretty severe. He didn't play the rest of the season, and the next season he met Shannahan in Denver to discuss playing there, and reports were that Shannahan advised him to retire with that concussion history and declined bring him to the Broncos.

People also forget C.Policy and D.Clark in their front office roles happened to us.
1.I can remember Bill Walsh(god bless him,I know hes smiling that we're back on top)insisting that we draft Jake Plummer, and they didnt listen as stated earlier.
2.they made numerous "for future considerations"trades to multiple teams with some of our talent,.recieving low round picks in return,n squandering away the picks on guys who never panned out.
3.Some of the afore-mentioned trades they made to the Cleveland Clowns,THE SAME YEAR they left to become the GM and personnel guys with Cleveland.I can remember a FB by the name of Mark Edwards bein 1 of em.
4.we subsequently got fined hundreds of thousands of $$$ and lost numerous draft picks for above mentioned trades,AFTER POLICY n CLARK LEFT for the Cleve.Clowns expansion team.
If I recall correctly,a "for future considerations"trade worked in a way that u can trade a player to a team for somethin a team could give u in the future, picks cash considerations, cap #'s off ur books, etc. The league outlawed that bs soon afterward.
5.policy n clark seemd to have a thing for picking up other teams big name, high priced free agents back then(as alot of teams did back then). Some were good(K.Norton jr,C.Doleman)some suckd(Winfred Tubbs,etc.).
6.I can expressly remember Policy saying on TV that their belief was "as long as we had Steve Young,we always believed we had a chance to win it all".they jus never made good decisions regarding other areas of the team.
When that fateful Aneas Williams hit came down, the roof caved in!!!!Steve Young masked so many defiencies,it wasnt funny!!!!!!

This is stupid. Everyone who has ever broadcasted has one of these brain fart clips in their closet somewhere. I'd rather listen to him than some douche named Sapp or Dukes.

Happy to blame TDon for everything from biblical times onwards. Fairly sure he wasn't with us in 2000 though.

Here's the deal. Young could have played longer, how many years did Young sit on the bench for us. He was relatively healthy. The reason why Young retired was that we started to have the salary cap issues. The Niners in their glory years worked out contracts that they were paying off many years later. Young even said, I would have continued to play but the Niner organization wasn't committed to going to the Super Bowl every year anymore so it was time to retire.
i was at that game and it wasnt a pretty sight--
