What is interesting is the number of players on the roster because of what they did not do for other teams. The FO has brought in a number of former first round draft choices that have flopped on other teams for relatively low cost and most have performed well here

Who are you referring to? The only guys on our roster I can think of off the top of my head that were first round picks of other teams are Rogers, Whitner, Ginn, and J. Smith and they weren't flops there (well, Ginn was as a receiver, not as a return specialist, and that's also the case in SF).

flop probably wasn't the best word. did not live up to their pick, and not flashy enough for the rest of the league. he also tried it with edwards though.

he seems to find vry talented guys who for some reason are not wanted around the NFL.
Yeah, the Baalkster is definitely earning his keep. Patience is a virtue...and he's got it in spades.

definitely. We have locked up key players like said prior to rookie deals being up or the year after they are up.

It will be different now, you cant re-sign/extend any rookie till after there 3rd season. Unlike in previous years where you could after 1 yr, and payers could ask and hold out, now they can't. Or they lose an accrued season.

I look at it in the past drafts since 2005 we don't have many remaining.

2005- Alex(If re-signed) and Gore(signed thru 2014)
2006- Vernon(signed thru 2015), Delanie(signed thru 2012), Haralson(signed thru 2013)
2007- Willis(signed thru 2016), Staley(signed thru 2017), McDonald(signed thru 2015), Goldson(Franchised), Brown(signed thru 2013)
2008- Grant(RFA)
2009- Crabtree(signed thru 2014) and Jean Francois(signed thru 2012)
2010- A.Davis(signed thru 2014), Iupati(signed thru 2014), Bowman(signed thru 2013), Dixon(signed thru 2013), Williams(signed thru 2013) and Byham(signed thru 2013)

Of those, Bowman is obvious for extension, I also think it would be smart to extend Iupati and A.David soon.

And Pre-2005 draftees left are, Spencer(2004), Sopoaga(2004) and Jennings(2000)

We have some vets who came in as FAs and have shined.

2007- Ahmad Brooks(off waivers from Cincinnati)
2008- Justin Smith
2010- C.J. Spillman(off waivers from San Diego)
2011- Donte Whitner, David Akers, Carlos Rogers

And hoping for Randy to do well in 2012.

The some UDFAs who have helped out.

Alex Boone is the top one. Of course 2011 draft was a success IMO. 5 players contributed in 2011, Aldon, Hunter, Culliver, Miller and Jones. Kilgore i think should be the RG. Then Person provides needed depth.

Overall we have a solid core and roster right now.

You realize he built this team, right? Alex, Gore, VD, Willis, Justin Smith, Staley, McDonald, Goldson, Brown, etc. He is the sole reason we even have Willis.

Willis was because of Nolan.

I don't really blame it all on McCloughan, it goes on Nolan and Singletary, both were terrible HC's,

But McCloughan didnt hit on late round guys. And not all his picks were great. Lawson didnt fit the system. Balmer was terrible, in fact the entire 08 draft was a bust. None of the 6 picks are pro bowl or starter material IMO, not even Morgan. He got overpaid.
nolanterry era built this team
Great observation, but we did get at least one big vet FA sign in Smith, but that was before Baalke.

The Eagles and Redskins are the exact opposite and you can see how it tears apart a team. You have players that have earned money, but don't get it and end up with the Jackson situation later.

I am very glad to see Baalke pay before money before we technically need to. This is very good for moral and builds unity in the organization. Also, money now is worth more later, so when you extend guys and give them more modest signing bonuses, it allows them to invest it and have control of it earlier. They respond by playing harder for you and give loyalty to the organization...this happened with McDonald, Gore, ICE, Davis...and on and on...many GM's screw people over for years, so no wonder they always leave when they get the opportunity.

Bowman will get an extension this year with a decent bonus...you can count on it.

I just sorta realized this, I don't know how many of you guys have as well - but all the guys on our team with big contracts are guys that have earned it WITH US (Gore, VD, Staley, Willis, Brooks, Rogers, RayMac). When we add external players, it's always on modest deals and when we give out big money, it's always to internal players. Makes sense, you wanna make sure a guy plays well FOR YOU before you give him big time bucks. That's why I guess we can probably (not definitely I suppose, but probably) rule out Mike Wallace or any of those guys - because the value we assign to a player who had a certain level of production with another team is way lower than the value we'd assign to a player with that same level of production, but for us. Obviously, not all GM's think like this, so other teams' offers for a guy like Wallace would likely blow ours out of the water.

this is a very great observation cause it is so true. this is such an overlooked attribute. bravo sir.
