Also I think to keep it in perspective the excitement about Tolzien is that we have picked up what appears to be a solid PROSPECT at the QB position.

Too late they've already retired his jersey.

Don't really need him if you have Phillip Rivers and Billy Volek as ur QB's. And it leaves a roster spot open for a position they need.

Tim Ryan commented that the NFL rule change doesn't require teams to keep 3 QBs anymore (That's what he said - don't know if that's accurate) and that the Chargers could very easily go with 2 QBs. He said that if the Chargers let go of Tolzien, his agent's phone would be ringing off the hook based on his performance in the pre-season. (and he made this comment early during Tolzien's playing time in the game).

teams have always been allowed to only carry 2 QBs, but the rule that changed was that the 3rd QB wasn't an "emergency position" on gamedays. So if your 3rd QB played it doesn't mean that your other QB's can't play in the game any longer, and the active roster went from 45 + 1 emergency QB to 46. so without a 3rd QB you can keep an extra DB or whatever active on gamedays.

Sorry but I didn't understand what you wrote

Nice developmental prospect. Tolzien is a good fit for the West Coast Offense. But our depth at QB is Alex Smith and two rookies? Seriously?

It seems Harubaugh is putting the season on Smiths shoulders (literally & figuratively). If Smith doesn't work out, it looks as if we are taking this as a rebuilding year. I don't see how Harbaugh would expect us to make the play-offs with such little experience at the 2 and 3.

You do realize they can resign McCown if Smith goes down, or one of the many other vet QBs likely not to have jobs?

I think they just saw that Tolzien has some talent and Geep Chryst (the QB coach) is the brother of the OC coach for Wisconsin, so he is probably pretty familiar with him and thinks highly of him, so they wanted to claim him before another team did. The Niners wanted this guy before camp, but Tolzien chose San Diego.

The Niners desperately need a QB of the future, so having lots of young guys around to evaluate isn't such a bad thing.

Sure he didn't look great, but people should have known when he was drafted he was a project QB. Kaepernick shouldn't even see the field until 2013 IMO. Tolzien seems like a good pick up. Would be nice to see him a CK battle it out and see who's better in a couple years. I'd rather have 2 good Qbs on this team than 0.
points well taken, now that is football sense.
I like it, but we really need a vet qb.
if Kristick gets bumped, I'll like this move better. I'm not sure what Kristick adds, and he can be put on the PS.

I thought the Niners might keep just 2 QB's in order to keep an extra promising developmental player--like Ian Williams, say--who might not have otherwise made the team, knowing they could call McCown at some point this year if they needed him. I guess signing Tolzien is essentially the same kind of move, but it does nothing to improve our QB situation this season, and if we need to bring in someone like McCown at some point, it will mean further thinning out another position in the name of keeping 2 rookie QB's.

I liked the move initially and then I cooled on it and now I'm warming up again. Tolzien certainly looked more NFL ready than Kapp.

I'm actually fine going in without another veteran, whatever vets are left out there are no better than these unknown guys. They're the david carr's of the league(or worse). If smith gets hurt it's safe to say we're screwed, but oh well at least if that happens we'll get a really good look at what these rookies can do.

THis seems like a great move. HE certainly had a nice audition for our coaching staff the other night. The guy was money with so many throws. To be honest he might be a better #2 right now than Kaep. I can't believe the Chargers didn't keep this kid.
Right on, ive been watching the game and the kid shows out big time. Nice pick up.

anyone still think kap isnt the #2 qb?
Great signing.I like wht coach H is doing.

Kaep is the number 2 because he knows the offense. But as far as future #1? I think they are both about even as far as future possibility. Both are projects, giving the edge to Tolzien due to experience in a pro-style and playing under center.

my bad, kind of rushed it.

the old rule was that the 3rd QB was an "emergency position." He didn't count against the active gameday roster limit of 45. But if he entered the game, no other QB could play in that game.

the new rule expands the active roster from 45 to 46, and removes the emergency position tag from the 3rd QB. So if he comes into the game it has no effect on the other QB's.

Teams aren't required to carry 3 QB's, and they weren't in the past. The only rule that has changed is how the 3rd QB effects the active gameday roster. And since you aren't required to carry a 3rd QB, the extra active roster spot can be used at another position--which is one of the "benefits" of only carrying 2 QBs.

Are you asking whether it is possible that Tolzien can leapfrog Kap into the #2 position?

Yes. It is possible and not at all unlikely.
