Alex should not have to put together long drives that wear out the other teams defense, no way it is unfair, this defense has to do more! This defense needs to start putting points on the board too! Ask Nate why he felt the need to score rather than just step out of bounds! LOL

Any defense? Dude, are you high? You do realize that when a Defense has to play the entire 2nd half because the offense goes 1, 2, 3 punt on every possession, that they will get tired? Some of you really have no clue what is going on out on the football field. You clearly have never played this sport or any sport in your entire life.

And it gives the offense more looks to make adjustments against that defense. The more time an offense has to adjust, they will find a weak area sooner or later.

except our coachs

That's because we don't have a guy who can throw anything other than a drag route, seam route to the TE, and a screen pass. We are limited. Believe me, no one is limiting this offense on purpose. Singletary, Mike Johnson both want to dominate.

Then why did Singletary get rid of Martz???

Unlike in previous seasons, this is not the case. The offense IS staying on the field. They just make a big mistake before they can score. The defense is getting plenty of rest time. They just need to play better when the game is on the line.

Totally agree. Despite the mistakes our offense makes, they have been staying on the field longer than previous years. The offense can move the ball, they can get first downs, they can throw it down the field in moments....its just that one mistake that always happens that kills the drive. But at the end of the day, the defense has been getting rest and have no excuse to being able to stop the other offense.

Question is they were able to stop the offense (NO and ATL) or at least limit them the whole game but on the last drive, they can't do it? If you ask me the defensive calls get more preventative to prevent the big play but in my opinion I'd send the pressure and if they get the big play, then lucky them. But you can't sit back especially with Brees and Ryan at QB, you'll get picked apart. Prevent defense is great from getting a TD but not to get into FG range.

Exactly - this drives me crazy. We don't have corners that are fast and/or good enough to cover the WR for an extended period when we only rush 3. I'll never forgive that 3 and 15/ 3 man rush toward the end of the game last week at Atlanta. We need to blitz there to force him to throw quickly, not give him all day to get the first, which Ryan did.
We need pass rushers

The defense has been a weakness but so has the offense we haven't been able to put a complete game together. The two blowout losses the whole team sucked lol and in the close losses the offense came to play and the defense played good until the ending
Every great defense that won a championship has had an offense that could score when it counted (at least). Right now, our offense is not helping...

Martz is an exception. He is near uncontrollable when it comes to over doing it and many coaches just don't want to deal with his headache.
The weakness? No.

A weakness? Yes.

The defense is on the field an average for 30minutes and 46 seconds. For an NFL defense, that's approximately half the game which is really the average time that the defense is supposed on the field.

Now, while the defensive time of possession is for 22nd in the league, the defense itself is partly to blame for not being able to get off the field. Consequently, in the rankings, we're right there in dToP with the Saints, Houston, Eagles and the Patriots.

The biggest misconception around here is that because the offense keeps going 3 and out, they're not giving the defense a chance to rest. There is not as much correlation as you would think.

Listen to yourself - get rid of Alex and our problems are solved. Do you not understand that it is a team sport, and the outcome is determined by the play of a minimum of 22 players. No QB (not even Manning) can be so dominant in this league that he can overcome an average OL, average receivers, average OC, average defense, and stupid mistakes.

I don't put it all on Alex, but to think he is not a problem is delusional. Yes the D could be better we are weak up front, so are a lot of teams, we are soft on the back side so are a lot of teams.
You couple a slightly above average D with an average O you will play .500 ball, you put an an awful QB at the helm of that offense and you are 0-4!

It is my honest opinion, based on years of football experience that Alex makes this offense worse not better. We have above average talent across the board on offense in all areas except one.

We are weak as a team because we have an awful head coach and an awful QB.

YES our defense is average, we have put all our big draft picks in the last several seasons (other than Willis) on the offensive side of the ball! We need to show the D some love this offseason.

D-line grade C
LB's grade B+
Corners grade C
Safeties Grade B
Coaching a solid B

Not all that impressive really, but it should be enough to keep us in games, and win a few if we had ANY help from the offense! & points! really not enough to beat the Falcons!

So we're 21st in defense (yards given up), are on the field 46 seconds more then the offense a game, have given up the most points in the NFL, show a consistent inability to make stops on 3rd downs (see TOP), have two starting OLB's who can't pass rush in the 3-4, continue to throw games away against Minnesota, NO, Atlanta (twice) and were absolutely destroyed by Seattle and KC and as a team, we've only won one game on the road in the past 10 and it's all Alex's fault? Hilarious?

More like this in 2010:
D-line grade D (destroyed for over 200 yards in KC and Willis has been getting man-handled...any sacks or pressures?)
LB's grade D (zero pass rush save from Willis in a 3-4 defense, destroyed on screens, few turnovers esp. on fumbles, 3rd down % sucks, short yardage still a major issue, can't cover middle of the field to save their collective lives, etc.)
Corners grade C (a few turnovers, as usual, great against the run and average in coverage and make critical mistakes on 3rd downs and T. Brown is terrible and we let Bly go)
Safeties Grade D (Goldson has been owned all year, couldn't make 2 critical 3rd and long stops against ATL and another in NO, solid in tackles but middle of the field is owned by the opposition, Lewis was done 2 years ago and now we have a rookie starting)
Coaching a solid F (we saw their defensive drills and they play like they practice, team only up for nationally televised home games, 1 win in last 10 on road, prevent has cost us huge wins and probably Singletary's job, can't stop a 3rd down, middle of the field is owned, OLB's are constantly being asked to cover 20 yards down the field, screens are still owning us, little focus on turnovers, veterans continue to make bonehead plays, T. Brown on White the entire game winning field goal , OLB's described as playing "great" etc.); horrible coaching not just from Manusky but from Sing as well. Field position for the D has been good this year where last year, the offense had them pinned back against the wall several times. It should get better with MJ at the helm too.

BTW: Are the Steelers complaining about their offense while they go 3-1 and almost 4-0 with a 3rd string QB and a former QB off the streets? Blaming the offense for the defensive woes this year is comical. Nobody in this thread is not saying the offense shouldn't be better...we're just not ignoring that our defense has been just as bad, if not worse in some cases. How? Alex and the offense at least drove down the field once AND made a 2-point conversion. The defense has yet to stop an opponent once (3 fails so far) at the end of the game...when it counted.

PS: Will you grade my papers? LOL

ADMAN, you have no clue about football here, if the offense can score more than one touchdown we would have won the game. The defense played there #$* off and have been the only good thing about our team!
It's not so much the defense as a whole but rather the defensive play calling. The soft zone they play during critical times is pathetic. This is something that was learned from Mike Nowin. The mentality of bend don't break is what kills the chance of winning games. Not to mention the defenses inability to stop the screen pass.

Why is it everytime we need a simple defense stop...we cant do it? The opposing offense just marches right down and scores. WTF!!!!! The ATL game we had them at 3rd and 15. And we give up a 20 yard pass to a TE. What type of defense does that?!??!

2011 draft we need a CB or some type of DB in the first round! No drafting QB's. Go get a proven starter! (We missed McNabb)

Alex Smith is the weakness.
Stop blaming our D, and stop making up more excuses.

This is the kind of Crisis good TEAMS get through. I can't wait to see how 49ers respond to a 0-4 start. On the verge of going 0-5 but hey remember that one year RAMS went 0-5 and still went to the playoffs. Possible for 49ers as well. Not saying that 49ers are going to lose just saying there is still hope after that.
