If Alex gets us to the first playoff game and we are one and done, that is not progress IMO, that is just us being in the worst division in football and that getting exposed the minute we made the playoffs.
Shaj, I would agree with you as I usually do when it comes to Alex Smith but there's not a minor difference between how Smith played last year to what he is showing now, there is a major difference.
I was expecting him to get the timing better due to better understanding of the receivers and the playbook, but this kid has vastly improved in the following areas:
1. Shifting in the pocket
2. Throwing accurately while shifting in the pocket
3. Stepping up into the pocket and making accurate throws
4. Scanning from left to right and hitting the outlet/WR/2nd or 3rd option
5. ZERO INTS
6. Finding the correct receiver rather than trying to force it into the primary receiver as it was designed on the chalkboard.
7. Complete command of the offense
The only thing I would like to see now is wanting him to run and move defenders around with his eyes but that second one is something only great QBs have done.
So, if he makes it into the playoffs, I'm sure this team will be good enough to get a win against any team but the Saints.
If the pass rush has a good game, I wouldn't count us out against the Saints. Brees goes down and they are not the same team.

if we lose to the damn saints its because of our d and their offense. i have no question that if raye calls a good gm that we can move the ball against the saints d. with our secondary questions and if were down its gonna be alex in the spread time throwing 40+ trying to match up with brees. it can be a fun gm offense wise

Given the state of this franchise in recent years, I think making the playoffs is progress. That said, I will not be satisfied with anything less than 1 playoff win.
This.
Getting to the playoffs is difficult. You don't fall trip and find yourself there automatically. This team is not necessarily ready to compete beyond one and maybe two rounds of the playoffs. If you think we are, expect to be disappointed.
Going to the playoffs is progress.
If Smith takes us to the playoffs, the arguments excuses are starting already.

exactly...and if another qb takes us to the playoffs then, "it's a remarkable achievement" lol
I mean when can some of us just be satisfied. I mean s**t, even if we snuck into the playoffs and are one and done, then at least we got there.
i remember Young and Montana both agreed that there is a fine line between 7-9, 8-8, 9-7, and 10-6 on. And we were at the 8-8 mark. I think if we went 9-7, and then even 10-6, that it would be more than enough to win the division.
Smith did a great job in that last game. The ONLY thing that does not bother, but lets me throw a little caution into the wind, is the fact that he has had no Game Action with Crabs. And very little with VD.
Pre-season is used to work on the little details. Work on the little if i turn this way or that way. yes they all worked hard in the offseason, but other than the game VD played in. The timing wasnt quite down yet. Dont remember if it was just a bad throw or not, im just concerned that they were supposed to get that 11-85 embedded in everyones brain like in TC, but that has yet to happen. And he and Crabs worked together in the offseason, but have yet to apply it to the game.
Just wondering anyone else thought about this chemistry yet???

everyone is saying this...it's just kinda overrated honestly. him and VD played fine last year with no chemistry in those final 11 games...seriously, this is being read into WAY too much

Sure, they played fine. "Fine" isn't good enough. It could've been so much better! There were a lot of missed opportunities last season.

no doubt getting to pyaoffs IN ANY division is ever a given. there are 3 teams who aren't trynna laydown for us. but i'm curious to hear why you feel the team "isn't ready" to go beyond the 1st.

crazier things have happened, including the Cards going to the SB after going 9-7 (I think) in the regular season.......everyone thought they would be one and done. I'm not saying that's what will happen, but it's definitely not impossible, assuming we make it to the playoffs. *knocks on wood*
