yeah his 40 time is less than desirable but i think field vision and instinct has A LOT more to do with being skilled in returning punts. he's definitely got a chance...
Not going to make the 53 man roster, with the addition of Ginn. Maybe a practice squad player.

Yup, I think his position skills will be refined there all while keeping a backup returner on the PS should something happen to Ginn. But you know this is just another classic webzone reaction to a UDFA that they have taken a serious liking to based off of his highlight reel.

I don't care about track 40 times. I certainly didn't see anyone catching him from behind. If anything, he was pulling away from virtually everybody! The guy may be a smurf, but he plays like lightning in a bottle. He's alot of fun to watch and we can't say that about anyone else we've had returning kicks.
I really don't care who we have doing it, but if we have results like he had in college, or even close to it, it's icing baby!

Hey now, Kory Sheets is averaging 5.0 yards per carry for the dolphins!
Certainly the plan is for Ginn to return kickoffs, and the team may try him out a bit at returning punts, but if he's often on the field at slot receiver (and the best at it by a long shot), I can't see him doing all the return duties. His history of fumbles as a PR at Miami is troubling as well, so I definitely see an opportunity for someone to fill that role. It's possible the #4 or #4 WR could fill that role, or a RB (but no RB we have on our roster today), or a DB (but we're thin enough at that position that the DC may not want to hazard an injury). If our defense plays well, a PR could touch the ball as many as 8 times a game or more, which creates lots of opportunities for field position improvement, so it's not completely daft to think Vann will have a chance to make this team as a specialist. I think the odds are against him because as I've said elsewhere it's hard to project how he might fare in the NFL vs. sketchy college special teams players, but I'd enjoy being surprised in a good way. Should be a fun preseason!

It will be interesting to see how punt returns are divvied up once the full 49ers' squad takes the field. In the span of a couple weeks, the 49ers added not one but THREE players with extensive backgrounds in that area. Indeed, the reason why Florida A&M free agent LeRoy Vann signed with the 49ers is because the 49ers told him their acquisitions of Ted Ginn Jr. and draft pick Kyle Williams did not change their desire to have Vann handle punts.

Good find and I agree. I had Williams also making the team b/c we went through, what 35 "returners" last year alone? Williams would make a good slot guy as well plus has return abilities. Keep all three!

You betcha. We will be cutting a WR or two that could be a 3 or 4 on many teams. The return game was atrocious last season. Look for that to be a thing of the past.

So you want to keep one punt returner (Ginn) that may have problems fielding punts.

PR deserves a roster spot the same way LS does. Or is it more important for Cody Wallace and Taylor to stand on the sidelines in sweat pants.
