To me, it seems like he didn't plan and have a staff in mind ahead of time. His few hires have been mediocre. The rest were inherited.

In his defense I dont think that he planned on being the HC in the first place. He got an internal promotion on a temp basis and then it turned into a full time gig.

He interviewed for the falcons job last year. If you even interview you should begin to have an ideal staff in mind.

Ok...and if those ideal people are under contract somewhere else or are not willing to go with you what then?

I am comfartable with the majority of his choices. I am however very skeptical of Raye.

Mornin'

Even under that umbrella of skepticism, Raye's proven to be able to modify his core offensive philosphy to accomodate the talent with Alex's switch to a more pass-oriented, spread offense in that GB game as an example. He transformed Vernon Davis into a well-respected TE, the other OC's didn't have a clue it seems. Raye uses his weapons aggressively at time with success. He had some adversity to go through and passed with flying colors.

I am excited to see what "opening up" the playbook means with Alex jumping head first into the pool of coaching a la Manning. He said he couldn't wait to engage and participate in game planning. Alex now has stability and consistency to expand his playbook. He's beyond functional now, he's growing in this O with Raye sharing his knowledge. I expect a concentration in the spread with how to counter the blitz.

Where there are questions with Raye, you can't say that about Manusky. What a find! He emulates that same persona as a ST and LB warrior when he played leading this D. That AZ game was a masterpiece. Give him a couple of more talented players at S and CB while getting more depth elsewhere, will only make this D improved against the pass, its weakness last year. I expect this unit only to get better which is a scary thought, a more consistent pass rush and more play in the secondary.

Beside the O and D, we now have some new and respected blood in Shotty. Sure, he hasn't taught ST in years, but you coach similarly in different disciplines. I equated it to my beautiful wife, the teacher. She can teach different levels even after an absence in one discipline. A great teacher or coach is a great teacher or coach no matter what. That is why I am excited about Shotty as he will have some serious voice in building his unit. I am sure this draft will have a few, not just one or two, players coming in to contribute. We will be getting a new return specialist who is actually explosive, no longer mediocre. After Everest, I didn't think our ST unit could get better. I was wrong.

I saved the most impressive selection from Singletary's list of coaches, Mike Solari, for last. As we learned, he made the top of Coach's list of OL coaches. Coach finally scratched the name off with a serious twist of fate that makes you believe in fate. Now, one of the most respected OL coaches in the league with a foundation in our beloved McKittrick's coaching, is ours again. He specializes in young starting talent. How fitting that all signs point to us selecting a RT in this year's draft. The timing couldn't be better.

So in closing this morning, I would rate Singletary's ability to select staff an A. Now, lets see how he manages this new nucleus next year. Based on what I keep seeing, I am impressed.

Great Post. Remember Raye wasn't his first choice at OC. It seems as though people remember Singletary right after the season ended saying, "we need to go get Jimmy Raye". That simply wasn't the case. He also brought in Mike Johnson as QB coach. The same Mike Johnson we keep hearing about as the heir-apparent OC. I would also attribute Alex's improvement to Mike Johnson. He is also the one who hand-picked Nate Davis as our future QB.

Singletary has also been very open, more-so than other coaches I can remember, to bringing back players to help out. Ray Brown's hire will probably be the best thing to ever happen to Chilo Rachal as a pro football player. I can't see him doing anything but set the perfect example of what and who an OL is.

Overall last season was always about this season. Seeing what kind of team we really had, and what we need to be the team we want. I, for one, am excited for this upcoming season.
It's tough to grade him at this point because I believe he was looking at the bigger picture when he made his hires.

At the moment I would give him a B though. No real complaints on the defensive side of the ball as we had a good defense and I think some of our struggles on defense are lack of talent rather than lack of coaching or scheme.

Offensively my big gripe with him was he did plan on keeping Forester and I firmly believed that he had the line under performing and fortunately Forester left on his own and Singletary made the correct hire.

Raye I'm mixed on because on the one hand while he was not terrible I didn't think he was all that great either but I don't believe Singletary hired Raye envisioning him as a fixture at the position anyhow. I think Singletary hired Raye as someone to install the system he wants and groom Mike Johnson for the job.

I think Singletary's ultimate goal on offense is to become what the Patriots are. What I mean is the Pats lose their OC they don't completely fall apart and hire a guy that has a new system and sets their offense back a couple of years. They lose a guy on offense they just promote the next guy up who continues the system and the machine just keeps on rolling like it normally does.

Which is why I think it's hard to completely grade Singletary since we don't know yet if the seeds he's planted will bear fruit or just grow weeds.
