Reason #1
QB play, Alex Smith just cannot get the job done and its been proven over and over. He is very inaccurate on the deep throws which you need because you cant always go on 15 play drives. He sucks on the third downs and also in fourth quarters when the game is on the line. Those things are crucial in winning close games.
Reason #2
We can't win on the road. We only won one game this year on the road and that was the first game against Arizona. This is a completely different team on the road, especially on defense.
Reason #3
The defense is good and not great. They are especially good at home lately but on the road they play below average and never get crucial stops when we need them. This defense needs to be great with this offense and this coaching mentality.
Reason #4
This one may shock you but its Mike Singletary. His conservative approach to the game is going to cost us in close games. Every time we get any kind of lead in the second half he immediately starts to shut down the offense and starts trying to run the clock out. With a p***y mentality like that good teams will always come back and beat us, just like in Minnesota.
Reason #5
Our personnel still is not good enough. We lack speed in the secondary, speed at WR and also consistent pass rush, and a good back up running back. Also we know about the Oline.
Reason #6
Scott McClueless every year we go into the off season with glaring needs and every off season he ignores them. So I have no reason to believe that this off season will be any different.
Feel free to add anything if I missed it.
With OL we have this year ;Alex has played really well . There is time were seeing guys run thru the line with out being touched , no way that is Alex fault . when your top WR is a rookie that has came in late this season really isn't much . Alex has played really well this year , next year when they draft some OL and Crabs and Morgan get more exp , I do look for the 49ers to make the playoffs. They did improve some this year and that is more than we did with Nolan's years .

i totally agree on what is written
Mark your words and mine : if we do not get a great draft (= we find two to three immediate starters) and we do not sign some meaningfull (read MEANINGFULL Scotty) FA's we're gonna finish 9-7 next year at best
Same team ? Same coaches ? Ok tell me why our problems that are well documented would be erased during the offseason ? Because you hope and believe ? Well that's your right but it won't help this team and you must then send a sniper to kill warner cos the cards would still be in front
I also think that we should develop Nate right now so when there will be no more room for Alexcuses (i'm probably dreaming on that one) he'll be ready to take off and we won't get the usual : "he hadn't enough time to learn the system"
OK just one example. How many snaps did Smith get with the 1st team prior to the season? How many times did he get to throw the ball to Davis or Crabtree?
And your argument is that practice does not make for improvements? So why do they bother to have TC's?
You're the kind of guy i like : just prove my point then put words in my mouth that i didn't say (or write in this case)
First : as expected your point of view is another Alexcuse (didn't practice enough blablabla) Yeah for sure he just had 5 years to practice, 5 systems and he didn't perform in any of 'hem (by the way 20th rated QB this season, link to SF gate article on the zone home page)
Second : of course practice is important that's why we started 3-1 (better prepared physically and mentally than other teams) but practice won't make a pony win the Preakness ... And yes i think Alex is the pony in this case
Now if you're linking practice and Nate (you could have but didn't) then you'll see my eyes wide open and we could start being buddy
So it's up to you man ...

Singletary has great drive and belief in his ability. He also has a great desire to find out why thinks aren't working and to fix them (i.e., bench Clements). He needs to focus his attention to the offense, specifically the OL, and the play calling which results in too many 3d-and-longs and no third down conversions and which is the most predictable in the league. He did not hesitate to pull JTO and can Martz, and I am optimistic that he can get McClown to beef up the OL and get Raye to improve the calls.

Sus, I hope you are wrong about next year, but my gut fears maybe you are right?

To succeed, we need:
1)a sharp and experienced owner, or a HOFO(head football ops), and don't have one
2)an experienced and successful GM, and we don't have one
3)an experienced and successful HC, who has been either OC, DC, or former HC, and we don't have one
Of all the above, the one we have least control over is a green & young owner, and this could be easily fixed by a skilled HOFO. Ron Wolf, anyone? He is reported interested in coming back to football.
An experienced GM could be finessed by a skilled HOFO, or, barring that, a successful GM from elsewhere.
An experienced OC, DC, or former HC, who has coached multiple positions should be the easiest (tho not easy) to accomplish. Much as i like bigMike, i just think he will get outcoached by better coaches all the time, and until he has spent the requisite amt of time as asst DC, asst OC, DC or OC, then I don't think he will ever get us to where we want to be. As it is, he is learning as he goes along, and that means we are from the gitgo, giving a big concession to opposing teams who have HCs with former experience as head of something, be it D, O , or HC.
Anything short of this and i agree with Sus, that 2010 won't be our yr if we don't get these top 3 issues resolved. A good GM or a good coach would never have allowed Foerster to stay on all yr, nor our WR coach. We are starting to build a nucleus of some pretty good players, but OL, passrush, DB needs big improvement. But even if we get those guys, we still don't have the skill at HC that we need, and 7-9, 8-8, or maybe even a 9-7 is all i see on the horizon...until we clean house at the top...and for crying out loud, get us a HOFO.

What you think upon grows. Whatever you allow to occupy your mind you magnify in your life. Whether the subject of your thoughts be good or bad, the law works and the condition grows. Any subject that you keep out of your mind tends to diminish in your life, because what you do not use atrophies. The more you think of grievances, the more such trials you will continue to receive; the more you think of the good fortune you have had, the more good fortune will come to you.
