I agree with Scot. If there's a QB they want they gotta take him. I like Smith and think he can start for us next year, but he's not good enough for me to say "nah, QB is set". He would have to throw 12 tds and 3 picks the rest of the season for me to believe that (won't happen).
We got Davis as a development and Smith looks like he can lead us as long as he can continue to get better. He's got three games left and he's auditioning just like Singletary last year. We'll see

I think that we're all uncertain about Smith. It's just that some of us want him to succeed, and some of us don't. I just pray that Alex isn't uncertain about his ability to lead a team. No more time to make excuses...just make plays.
Its not really about some wanting him to succeed and some not. I think the people who seem "against" him just want us to RESOLVE the situation quickly because they don't think Smith is the answer, and those who are "for" him don't want us to get rid of him or spend another high pick on a quarterback.
If we spend a high pick on a QB, it be the same s**t for the next 2 years unless we get a Manning type QB. I think we can win with Smith and the team we have right now going into next year.
IMO, there are some of us here that neither hate Smith nor love him and just look at the body of work. When I see Alex play I try to see if he's corrected the things that have held him back since he came in the league. I'm waiting to see Alex take games over and will us to win games that we would not have otherwise. Just as we've seen Montana, Young and Manning and many others do it on their way to becoming elite QB's.
The Smith issue for me is whether he's the type of QB that will get us to the first round of the playoffs then lose every other year for 10 years or is he good enough to get another SB trophy which is what it's all about. Hell I want the Niners to be the first to 7,8,9 and 10 Lombardi trophys and if Alex is that man then great but if he isn't then we need to find the one who is and not waste time.
U make it sound like Alex is the ONLY player out there....the ISSUE for me is if THIS TEAM CAN GET US INTO PLAYOFFS. Yes it starts with Alex but it doesn't end there. As over right now, jury is STILL OUT but evidence now shows Alex being legit. How good will he become? Time will Tell.
The QB is USUALLY the most important player on the field, right? The difference between good(playoff) and great(SB) teams USUALLY depends on the play of the QB, right?
as of right now......I'm more worried about philly...he's good e'nuff for that....but we could have been 7-6 if a few catchable balls were hauled in. I agree that the QB is 1 of the most important pieces in the puzzle. Time with Crabz & VD....in OTAs & TC.....Alex can every well emerge to be very good....Only Joe can be Great

I'd dispute that. At best, I would say that he will be an elite QB. At worst, a lousy QB (which he is not - great? no, lousy? no). If he does not continue developing, he will remain average (IMO where he is at this point in his career).
If you average out his numbers for an entire season Smith is right now a top tier QB.

Back to Smiff.....1 thing that sticks out in my mind was that drive that led to Crabz TD....He looks to be in complete control.....confident...he didn't let the iffy throws phase him....Heck he was even under center quite a bit.....

I disagree. There are clearly people on this board that love when something bad happens that they can blame on Smith. The great play by Duckett to get an INT was one example last night. Another is the second INT were it was a communication issue between the QB and receiver that would have normally been worked out during the pre-season.
It's getting increasingly difficult to take you seriously. I know Smith can do no wrong in your eyes and you like to fantasize that it's you and him against the world but the criticism (as much as the praise) leveled against him isn't without merit.

Draft another QB???Are you serious???

If Scott DOES NOT upgrade the OL then he should be fired.Draft all the QB's you want and it won't mean shyt unless the OL is fixed.
And who says Alex has 3 games left and is auditioning???

Are some of you guys watching 49ers football at all?
Alex has already showed he could be the QB and will be THE STARTER IN 2010,PERIOD
On offense: keep Raye, fix OL,Alex,Gore,Crabtree,Davis, etc working together from day 1 in tc next year and they will no doubt be good and only get better.

Put up or shut up. If Alex Smith wants to be the quarterback of this team next year, he needs to win this game. Now before I get yelled at let me explain. Football is indeed the ultimate team sport, but in big games (such as this Sunday), really good or great quarterbacks shine. I don't care who is on the oppossing d and what they do, Alex has to find a way to complete his passes and make plays when a good qb should make them. This game will tell us if he is our guy or not.

no it wont, his line isnt very good. who knows if staley will be 100%. and Philly is absolutely awful at covering TE's. were going to see alot of VD this sunday. i dont think its a highly accurate picture of what Alex Smith is or is not.
about 5-6 games into the 2010 season we will likely have a good idea if Smith is stepping to the next level or not.

personally I think this game falls soley on Smith's arm. Now as far as this game determining anything about our future at qb is ridiculus. If we win in philly it will be considered an upset, nothing more. I wouldn't expect to much out of frank in the running game because of phillies stout run defense but he did have a decent game against them last year so you never know. The only thing smith needs to accomplish in this game is his ability to protect the ball at all costs. Eagles corners love jumping routes and picking off the ball but it also leaves them vulnerable for big plays just look at the giants game last sunday night. The pump fake might be Smith's beast friend come sunday.
