Man, Vernon just flat out sucks on curl routes. Did you notice that 12 yard curl reception he had. He had the LB on him AND he got the backer to turn his hips at about the 8 or 9 yard line, but Vernon's break down was sooooo slow and all he did was turn around instead of coming back to the ball which made THAT LB, who was easily beat, look like he had tight coverage.
Man, Vernon will NEVER get YAC on curl routes, which is the biggest comfort route for a QB to TE combo.

It's time to trade Vernon (for nothing less than a starter or first round pick).
1. He'll never have more value
2. He leads the league in drops.
3. Alex Smith is inconsisent. We can't afford to have our leading receiver inconsistent as well.
4. Vernon has no 'football" sense. Did you see the way he pulled back from that deep interception Sunday? He didn't change his route, become a defender, or even try to tackler in defensive player. In fact, Vernon got out of his way. TV commentator said he'll learn how to run and catch inside (by rubbing off referees, etc.) He hasn't learned in his four years. He too often has his head turned to the pass, not realizing he is the hot receiver.
5. Delanie Walker can do nearly all VD can except he'll catch more balls.

I agree with you, if the right compensation was presented I would trade him. Yes he has made some plays and has scored a lot of TDs this year. But the TE has to have great hands and now how to find open spaces in the defenses. Its not about being the fastest guy.
If we could get a pro bowl caliber OL, S, CB or pass rusher I would trade VD in a heartbeat.

That's what I'm saying. This off season, VD will not be seen as damaged goods. Other teams will see only his TDs and highlights. Not his lowlights.
With a good to great defense, the Niners need a dependable and consistent offense. Consistent in drive to drive and game to game. The tight end needs to help make the third down plays. How many did we miss Sunday?

He will never be great if he doesn't do the little things to build up his game. He has sadly cost us a few games IMO.

...you must be joking. why would you take away our most dominant pass-catching playmaker? I understand he makes drops. but he also has scored double-digit TDs and close to 1000 yards. who's going to make up for that scoring and yardage?! obviously not our WRs. not frank gore. i just don't see anything logical in this.
Edit: you make a terrible point in above bolded statements. our leading receiver -- let's get rid of him. Delanie Walker will replace him? Oh yea? When he begins to fumble profusely and at critical times you will be screaming to get rid of him. VD is a bright spot on our team.

I realize my argument is radical. Someone will have to make up the yards and scores. But with another starter or perhaps a draft pick like Spiller, the team will have more scoring and yards. Walker has shown no tendency to fumble despite yesterday. Don't dismiss VD's role in the team's low scores with his routes where he doesn't look for the QB, doesn't adjust to the pass and requires a second TE on the field much of the game.

VD creates mismatches everywhere for opponents, teams are planning against him, he isn't the problem. The problem lies with our OL and QB.
Imagine if he had Manning throwing to him instead of what we have now. That pick yesterday that Smith threw where VD didn't go up to defend it would have been a TD, it would have been right over his head into VD's hands and would of been a TD. Instead everyone is blaming VD for not going up to defend the pass.
Or how bout our QB staring down VD ALL THE TIME, it's making VD looks bad, sure he's had a few drops also but that's just him, he's made more great plays than bad ones. VD is finally the player we've hope for and now people want to trade him away, unf**kingbelieveable. Yea let's trade him for unproven draft picks

To this I am still skeptical. With VD on the field, we have a player that can make the catch in traffic (when he doesn't drop it -- i COMPLETELY agree that he drops the ball far too often). Not only that but defenses HAVE to gameplan for him because he is such a threat. It is even because of VD that the opposing defense may not stack the box. With Delanie Walker, this will not happen. Not only that, but our best offensive formation has both DW and VD as receivers. Taking away VD will make us nowhere near as threatening. With the supposed 1st round pick we get, and if we managed to get Spiller -- I agree we have an explosive player. But isn't that replacing one with another? And is Spiller going to be able to catch the ball on go routes? Is he going to be a good blocker -- an extremely large advantage to Vernon's skill set. I'm all for getting an upgrade, but at the expense of a complete downgrade on not only our vertical passing game, but our blocking? I just don't see it. However, I agree he makes many mistakes -- he MUST play better. But his spotty play is overshadowed by the great plays he DOES make. He's on the verge of breaking an NFL record!!

Vernon is one of the bright spot on the team. Some posters here are just haters, just unbelievable. You have to understand that those drops are something that we have to deal with. He is not the best TE in the league and needs to improve in other areas of his game to be one of the elite but to let him go or trade him is just insane. it's ridiculus.
If I'm not mistaken, he was a big part of that one TD drive (Smith to Morgan) against the Eagles. We convert a fourth down play 8 times this season and he is a big part of those. Also, don't blame the guy when the QB (when being pressured or blitz and VD is the hot read) will panic and threw the ball to the ground. Don't expect him to catch the ball when the ball was thrown to his feet. I've seen it so many times whether it's Shaun or Alex is under center. Some of you are truly unbelievable. No wonder Niners fans are called Whiners.
