It all depends on where the 9ers finish. If we end up 9-7 or 8-8 and Smith plays well, he will be the starter going into 2010. If we end up 5-11 or 6-10, than yes, in all likelihood their will or should be an open competition. We will find out. Let's focus on the Jags and Seahawks.

They'll both be here and they'll both be competing against each other as should be, but the safe money will be on Alex Smith winning out again. If the 9ers can fix their offensive line once and for all in the off season, then we'll finally see if Alex Smith is going to become the team's franchise QB. A lot of different things have occurred to obscure the answer to this question, but next season he should have the O-line and the weapons to succeed – no excuses after next season.

Well i hope Davis can lead us if Smith doesnt do that good. But i think they will start and play Smith for the entire season next year, and then go from there.
The only issue i have with Davis is I think he's gonna have to be a backup first before he can be game ready. TC, Preseason, or OTC are ok. But it's NOT the actual NFL season.
I also remember when it said that for Davis they use more visuals and less reading, and he's not getting any info now.
I say Start Smith, make Davis the backup, if we dont add a vet. so that if alex doesnt pan out. Davis will have watched a whole season, and took his time, rather then throwing him out to the wolves.
So i say barring no injury or horrific in offensive production. Smith is the best out of the 3 on our roster right now. And it would be nice to actually have a continuing offense for the first time in 7 years i think. Where the whole system is coming back, and Smith would have all offseason to tweek any issues.
If all else fails Davis should be ready, but i say wait till after next season, if smith doesnt pan out.

In an earlier post, I showed the top rated QBs coming out of college from 2005 to 2009. There are thirteen of them, including our beloved Alex Amith. Based on ESPN's current QB ratings for those that have played enough to qualify for the list, it hows that Alex is third with an 81.1 rating. He is exceeded only by Rodgers and Flacco. This shows that drafting a top-rated QB does not often produce magical results, at least not in the first few years.
While it would be wise to draft a QB prospect for future development, realisticly we will more likely go with Alex and see how he progresses with a better OL.
After having had time to digest the game film, Singletary declared at yesterday's press conference that "Alex Smith, to me, is throwing the ball as well as any quarterback in the leagueright now. ... He is as accurate as any quearterback in the league right now." He didn't have to say that if he did not believe it to be true.

I wish NFL Europe was still around, Nate Davis would benifit greatly from it. I think Nate Davis is still another year or two away from competing for a starting spot if that, I think at best he is a backup who can start a game or two and give you a spark. I think the problem with Nate is that the team he is on will always have to simply the playbook for him.

I'm pretty sure next year is 2010.

Unless Alex wins games, he will have to compete in camp wherever he is playing.

Well, much will be decided about Alex over the next 6 weeks. But right now I say no competition. The way many are starting to turn on Singletary, I don't think he can afford one. He HAS to win next year. He must find a way to get his hands on a solid veteran qb and start him. If Alex still needs to compete for the job, it aint him. Our offense needs continuity and leadership so bad. I do look forward to seeing if Alex can continue to develope more chemistry with our WRs over the rest of the season. That Smith to Crabtree connection is looking good right now.

We can only hope he is good enough to force the issue, the fact that he is not number 2 on the depth chart implies this coaching staff does not think he is the future, but I would be inclined to do just the opposite of what ever this assortment of clowns suggests, at least offensively.
