When Balmer was drafted, Franklin was not the player he is now, nor was Justin Smith and Sop playing like they are now either. All three of those guys are starting ahead of Balmer in a 7-man unit that is now being considered one of the top 5 or 6 in the NFL.
Balmer has gotten some playing time, and when he does, he holds his own well as a 3-4 DE. He looks like he could be a good player if there was a spot for him open. Let's hope that does not come by injury.
Hindsight is always 20/20 but the fact is, Balmer, a two-year project, was drafted just about where most teams had him rated.

Has Balmer done anything.......?

HELL NO!

Are you sure?? I mean he's pretty agile for a big guy. He should be able to break one here and there. Don't you think?

Maybe we should've played like Balmer early before he was ready ala Rachal because Chilo has been amazing.
Balmer comes in to give somebody a rest or on goalline situations.
Guess who was on the field for the goalline stand when Aubrayo got his int? Balmer....
So how did he do on the 3 plays on the goalline: something positive on every play.
I rewatched the goalline stand again....and here's what he did.
First play: Bears run directly at him. What does he do? Holds the point of attack and creates the pile so Spikes can come over the top to stop Forte....exactly what a DT is supposed to do..
Second play: Bears run to Sopoaga's side. What does Balmer do? Slams inside of Kreutz and gets into the backfield to prevent any chance of Forte of cutting it back.
Third play: Cutler's INT to Aubrayo. Balmer bull rushes Kruetz and gets great penetration and chases Cutler backwards. He actually closes the left passing lane forcing Cutler to throw directly at Franklin.
So to answer your question- Has Balmer done anything? Yes, usually when he steps onto the field he does something positive.
On one of Forte screens, he was the only the DL to actually read the screen. He obviously wasn't fast enough to catch him running but he still played discipline football.

yes he has taken a roster spot but his salary is not bad at all. He's a DL that we knew needed some development when we took him. Look at all the other DL drafted in the 1st round in the past 2 seasons none of them have huge production. It takes a while for DL to develope and I think we're doing the right thing by letting him sit and only play in spurts.

Yeah, he's one of our leading kick returners.

great post....every player picked is not instantly going to have 10 sacks and a ton of tackles. our dl is awesome right now and balmer is one of the main subs. I really like it that we are in a position to take an extra dl and actually develope him.

Balmer has more kick returns than tackles in his career.

This would be thread 240.
All I can say is that some of you need to lighten up. You could take this thread title and apply it to everyone on the Defense except Willis and Smith.
What I mean by this, is that SOMEONE always gets pointed at. Don't believe me? Lawson? Harylson? Nate? Roman? Lewis? And each one of these guys have their moments. I expect nothing less from anyone on this Defense.
You CANNOT fault the Defense for the Losses. So back the truck off and stop trying. It's ludicrous to even make a stupid thread about it. They've ALL (Including Balmer) been playing their asses off. Some guys it takes a couple of years to understand the speed and the way the game is played at the Pro Level.
And the Reggie McGrew comment? Are you FRIGGIN kidding me???? McGrew played ONE season and then hung up his cleats cause he didn't want to play so far from home. He was expecting someone else to try to trade for him and it didn't work. That's the LAST guy that Balmer should be compared to.

He won't make a difference at this point the way Smith, Franklin, and Soap are playing.
He was a reach anyway in the draft.
