too late for that... BTW, I was at the NY bar you suggested, Finnerty's. I misunderstood when you said "a group of us." I didn't think it was literally going to be packed with niner fans. Everyone there seemed pretty happy with the Smith appearance in the second half... although, it seemed as though there were a ton of underage college kids that don't know a damn thing about football...
Thanks for the suggestion!

I entered this season thinking Smith is a "semi-bust", injuries kept me from labeling him as a total bust. But Smith threw 3 TDs and had much more poise in the pocket and better accuracy in only 2 qtrs vs. Hill has shown in an entire game all season. With the addition of Crabtree and now that Gore is back, we have a better chance of winning (but not against the Colts, after that game).

Okay, while I like Alex -- this maaay be a just a little
too much just yet..
If he can play well against Indy and then torch Tennessee, I'll be 100% confident this is our Franchise guy. Up until now I've just always felt Alex absolutely had the ability to do so if he just would get the opportunity again.
He's got it. Right here, right now is his opportunity, and I think he's got it in his head that he's not going to disappoint.

What would Alex Smith have to do this season for you guys to support him as our starter?
In my opinion, Alex does look much improved. I hope he can back it up this weekend vs. the Colts. I think he'll be fine this time around. Sure, there are areas where he needs to improve, but I believe that will come the more he plays. He looked pretty good for not having played in nearly 2 years!

Revive our offense...he doesn't have to throw for 300 yards every game, as long as we get the wins. I really want him to turn into our franchise QB, I'm sure every Niner fan wants the same. The performance he put on in the 2nd half has me still in shock, I can't even remember the last time we looked that great on offense.

Win and win consistently most importantly. It is one thing to show up for a half but it is another to do it week in and week out. I am shocked also at his performance last weekend. I could not believe my own eyes for sure.
Best hálf of football the kid has played in his career IMO. He definitely gave Indy some extra game planning and I really hope they can stay in the game early. That is the key. If the niners can go up early I believe in our D. I just don't want to have to rely on the defense for wins.
I'm rooting for him for sure. I am a fan of the team and not the QB. Depite all of my harsh words before. It was not personal it was because his performances in the past had mostly sucked and made it hard to watch for a while. If he can win consistently than god bless him. If not I hope we find that heir apparent ASAP.
Go Niners!!

Good to see this from you man. I know you've hated Alex before, but damn... that was a different QB we saw on Sunday then we did a couple years ago.
Just like Crabtree, if Alex gets in there, and shows us something we're all behind him just like that.
My nightmare is he gets hurt again trying to survive behind our line. It would be hard to believe anybody can survive the rest of the season QBing for us with the pressure we've been allowing. Then again compared to Hill, Alex seemed to handle the pressure better.
I don't totally buy the laid back Houston D in the second half theory. I thought the deal was when you're up 21-0 late all you have to do is pass rush. Houston's D is soft though. Indy's will be a stiffer challenge. The name of the game is still stuff the run and go after the quarterback. Without a running game it will be tough for Alex back there.

I think Alex is the ultimate high risk-high reward player for us in the sense that:
IF Smith's mind really has "clicked" and he has become the "dynamite" player Meyer said he'd be once he "gets it..." then...wow. We have a VERY special player on our hands and our starting franchise QB for the next 10+ years. If Smith can play like he did on Sunday more often (obviously not all the time) then we can win titles.
BUT....(the "risk part")
IF Smith was just a product of the circumstance and he goes into inconsistent Alex mode and what we saw was an abberation then...well..we draft another QB and Alex will be a bust.
It will be interesting to see. I dont really buy the idea that "Hooostuhn reelacksed dood.." or "Alecks had nutheeing to looose dood!" Who cares really. When Alex was playing it wasnt about Houstons defensive breakdowns more than it was about Alex's WELL PLACED throws and doing the things we've been wanting him to do since 06.
I mean look at this 3 TD game vs the 3 TD game vs Oakland. Clear difference. Back then Alex was playing "well" against shoddy defenses that broke down. In other words, defenses made mistakes therefore Alex had to capitalize...NOW...Houstons defense played well but Alex picked them apart and basically let it rip. Alex CREATED the plays this time. So its very different now and no I dont think this was a blue moon type deal. He could be the real deal. Obviously we'll see, but I believe it more NOW than I did after good games before.

I agree, and a big reason for that is Alex's poise. He seems much more relaxed in the pocket now. Maybe he's matured. Eli Manning didn't look very good his first couple of seasons, but now he's a well-respected QB. Sometimes it just takes time. We'll know a little more after the Colts game.

On Sunday, Alex should stare down a receiver on each play and then quickly throw it to another guy.
Championship.

Stare down Frank Gore! They have been watching 5 1/2 games worth of film of the ball only going to Frank and who ever else is in a 5 yard radius of the ball.
