Uhmmm..... just to set the record straight. Alex Smith has always been critized for being to careful and not taking chances throwing the ball.
Except when Antonio was on the team. He's the main reason Alex threw a lot of his picks. Wonder where Antonio's belt was? It was hanging on Alex's locker with the obvious message that if Alex didn't get him the ball he'd be whoopin that ass.

and to any numbnuts that said no, wtf has hill done? jumped on frankies back, thrown a few short passes. hes not even getting 200 yards a game. prolly not even 150 yard avg. so so far alex played better in 07 than hill is right now! i remember some bombs to both ab's..... i dont see hill doing anything like that.
False: check out their percentages and rating.
i meant 06 which is the only year u can judge him off of.
Even then.
joe so sarcasm aside, do you not agree that the box would not be as stacked if alex were in there beacause he can throw the deep ball? and better imo from mid to deep.
The box has always been stacked against Alex. Remember, he's not an accurate thrower, even on the deep balls.
joe i disagree 06 was when gore hit 1600 yards, if they did stack it it was late in the season.

Like it or not Hill barely won the starting spot from a guy that had been out for 18 months with a major shoulder injury, and kinda got it by default. He surely didn't play any better than Smith, in fact, he looked more confused than Smith in the second preseason game. If Smith is so bad, then why couldn't Hill blow him away? The answer is that Smith is not as bad as some of you proclaim him to be, some of you guys are just knee jerk reactionaries that are predisposed to wildly overreact to even minor occurrences.
Smith is horrible, what are you smoking?

I'm not commenting on the opening post but on the 49%ers that hate Smith so much they voted no.
We would have won either game with either player based on the overall product. In fact Hill ALMOST gave away the game against Sheattle. You cannot summarily dismiss that he left the ball out there way too long when he was stripsacked. Staley pulled his fat out of the fire with that one. Remember the 3 second clock drills in Camp? Hill left it out there a good 5-7 seconds.
I won't blame it ALL on Shaun but come on that one right there on our side of the field could have killed us huge.
I didn't get to see the Az game but I imagine that Smith would not have been any worse in pass to completion ratio. Can't say if he would have had any turnovers or not so I'm just basing my opinion on the overall stats of both games.

if Alex was starting.. no way do we win vs Arizona!
his 3-out drives all day would have tired out the D, and let the cards come back in the 4th quarter!
Alex is not only inconsistent.. but throws behind receivers and at their feet. guys never have a shot to run for more yards.
Alex is a BUST.... get over it.. he had his shot and failed. Hes a nice smart kid.. but does not have the football smarts to compete in the NFL.
The 49ers have a new Offense this year and it will probably take Smith 3-7years till hes ready to start.
Hill is the 49ers QB.. yeah he didn't have 400yards last week.. but there was no need to air it out.. we ran the ball to kill the clock. and when he was asked to throw in the 4th quarter he did just fine getting us up the field! he freaking led a 9+min drive..
the 49ers just dominated the seahawks on that 2nd half! Hill and Raye are still getting comfortable with the offense. give them a few more weeks and this team will continue to improve and open up more! and if Hill starts driving up the field more, this will be a scary team to face all year! a team that has the talent to go deep in the playoffs!
all i have to say.. in 2007 Alex Smith held the team back from winning the division/playoffs. THE KID IS A INJURED PRONE BUST.. his best year in 2007 = TONY BANKS ROOKIE year numbers....
Smith key career stats: 30starts 19TD's, 31INT's, 63.5QB rating.
Hill key career stats: 12starts 19TD's, 9INT's, 90.1QB rating.
now the key Question. who gives you a better shot to win if Hill gets injured
Nate Davis or Alex Smith?
my vote is on Davis

That one pick, hit the Receiver in his hands. I don't consider that a QB stat, regardless of whom the QB is.
And the competition was ended prematurely. Probably due to the sprained thumb Alex was nursing, but Smith even stated that it would not have kept him off the field if he was called on. Sing even backed him up on that.

You'd be throwing behind and at their feet TOO sitting behind the worst OLine(s) in 9ers history. If he is that bad then Hill MUST be worse, given that Smith looked better than he did in Preseason.
But then that doesn't matter to the knee jerk reactionaries that form the Fan rank and file of the 49ers. To you guys Smith should have been out of the league AGES ago. Nevermind that's how Hill was looked at prior to starting an NFL game. No wonder they are such good friends. They've got alot in common.

If Smith looked better than Hill did in preseason, he would be the starter right now. That is why they did not just give Hill the starting job before preseason - they wanted to give Smith a chance to show he is better. I don't think Smith looked terrible in preseason btw. But I don't think he looked better than Hill either.

The stats tell differently. Smith had that ONE pick in two games. And it was only cause the WR knocked the ball high enough for the Opposing D to get it. Smith looked more polished(though he SHOULD have since he'd been working hard to get back) and I think that HAD we seen a third look Smith would have continued to play better. I'm glad he got a shot but I think that both players as well as the fans were short changed in calling it before the 3rd and final game of the competition. Cause Hill sure as hell ain't showing anyone right now that Sing picked the right guy. I'm hoping that Sing got it right but so far not so much.
