Something along the lines of:

"but he's only twenty-[blank] years old."

"it's his 4th OC in 4 years. You gotta give him time."

"he doesnt have the supporting cast. You need more than an all-pro RB to win games."

"we ruined him by letting him start his rookie season. Clearly, 5 years on the bench is invaluable to develop a player."

"remember the Zona and Seahawk games. Forget the other starts. Those 2 showcased the real Smith. Give him 2 years, and he'll be doing that consistently."

POTD!! So true!!

hahahahaha

a pick or 2 here and there in the 'zona game and we lose. Hill won the game for us.

a pick or 2 here and there in the Seattle game and we still win. Gore won the game for us.

Just like those picks he threw in the first two games of 06 and 07? Oh wait...

Didnt make nearly as many 3rd down conversions as hill did either... and thats where the difference would have been... and please dont bring up that run either.

Hill has had a much higher completion %,

Why wouldn't he have a higher % ? 95% of his throws are 7 yards or less in distance, and usually to the first dump read. Even if he has plenty of time, he takes the easy short pass, and often gets rewarded with RAC yards. Alex takes more shots down the field and would hold it a lil longer for a chance at a deeper pass (but not excessively like JTO) Only Alex is more careful with the ball and better in the pocket than JTO proved to be. Hill is the safest (luckiest) of the bunch, and simply loves the short stuff. He has an ugly deep ball, and his decision making and accuracy is less than good when it comes to intermediate + deeper passes.

Hill has been doing just enough to help the defense and Gore win games... so he will remain our starter for a while... and one day when Gore and/or the defense fails... Hill will be required to do more. Then we will see if he can get things done. I hope he can, because the Niners come first with me... but do I think he can? .... eh, probably not.
I don't think so Tim.

LB
Probably not the Cards game, we played very mistake free, against the seahawks sure...

And whoever said Hill doesn't have a chance to take us to the superbowl...sorry but you naive (i should call u something else). You trying to say that Grossman, Dilfer, Brad Johnson, better QB's than Hill? If anything they are about equal in their physical talent.
we were 2-0 in 2007 with less talented WR o line and D not to mention we played the same teams and they were clearly better than they are now so of course we are 2-0 if alex starts (dont forget hostler was our OC too)

Shaun Hill is doing exactly what Smith is doing but with a much better team. He's managing the game and making plays when necessary. (comparing first two games of 09 vs 07).

That said I think Hill is doing a better job of the above. But to think we'd be 0-2 with Alex is unfounded. This is gores offense not Shauns or Alex's offense or any Qbs offense.

Gore ftw.

Already been done. The year after Alex took us to a 7-9 record, he started 2-0. Bertrand Berry sat on his shoulder, and the rest is history.

Props to Hill for winning more convincingly. He has a more talented team around him, to be fair though.

Alex is talented & has a lot of upside. I hate how much venom people have for him in the Bay.

It was Rocky Bernard who sat on Smith.
whats smiths winning % when the run game averages less then 100 yards a game or under 3 yards a carry?

we should be debating wether or not smith would be 1-1 or 0-2.

there is no argument that could sway me to think smith could win that zona game. i dont recall him ever winning a game were the run game was that unfunctional.

i think smith could have pulled the sea game...but i can understand the concept of keeping the defense off the field.

smith sucks at sustaining drives and gets his defenses killed when they are dead tired in the 4th qtr.

so i get the concept behind the 0-2 talk.

for me though my best guess is 1-1

Wow, I love the confidence Hill Lovers have in their Boy, but not the way you guys over rate him. Claiming he beat Smith in an open competition, which he won by default due to his previous year (which he actually was better) and the fact that Smith got hurt.

Hill is not that good and seems to have regressed since last year. I absolutely Love the way he has been running himself into Defensive players instead of stepping up into the pocket. Or how he doesn't even look for a wide receiver and throws it to the flat right away.

The fact is Smith is not the great but neither is Hill. But Smith has way more ability and he can protect the Ball. In '06 i remember he didn't throw his first pick until the 4th game of the season that year against Kansas City. Actually i remember Smith being pretty dam accurate with deep throws. One that kills me is that one to Bryant in 06 in the first game agaisnt the cardinals but got Nullified because of the Kwame Harris.

Fact is neither QB is great, but i believe we can all agree that Hill has hit his Ceiling, and while it's not too bad, it's nothing of superbowl caliber because we do have the defense of the Ravens won that Superbowl with Trent Dilfer.
Why do we still keep talking about this Bum?? i mean BUST!!!!!!

i want to see ALL the groupies reaction when we draft a QB & Leaf gets cut to make

room for the rookie next season i bet this will how the groupies will react.......

Protect the ball ?

Remember all those debates about Smith's small hands as a reason for his constant fumbling.....

Accurate with deep balls ?

You obviously did not watch Niner football 2-3 years ago. Please get your facts straight before you post nonsense....

Gore didnt win us the game vs. Arizona. Nor did he win it for us against STL or Washington last year. Hill made the throws to lead us to victory.

Besides the Seattle game, when did Smith do this for us ? Also, note that all the games Ive listed show that Hill has done this CONSISTENTLY. Unfortunately, you'll have to go back through 3 years worth of play to pull out 2-3 good DRIVES (not games) to defend Smith.
