I agree. It seemed to be the smart move, and the Niners did it, before anyone even expected it.

I can't help but compare this move with the previous regime's antics. Nolan always had some other motive or idea in mind. For example, bring in Justin Smith, but play him as an OLB, experiment, move him around. Never anything straightforward and smart, or expected.

So I like the move, not just because it protects N. Davis, who looks like a possibility at QB for the future, but because it was a smart, straightforward, no nonsense move that Singletary made without blinking.

And it was done in a classy way, with due credit to Huard for being the professional he has been, but with an eye on the future and making the team better. IMHO.

WOW!! Everyone on here is jocking Davis to fast! Go look at the ESPN NFL Insider today. He is far from learning the playbook, but what he's done in games is against scrubs for the most part. Come on Cleo Lemon & Bruce Gradowski lead the league in passing. he is not our savior!

Have you ever watched him play in College or viewed any pre-draft info on his background? I'm not saying the guy is our savior....he's no where near ready to start yet.... in my opinion, but the fact is people outside of this forum are also taking notice of his talents and potential. John Madden was on KCBS giving Davis major props....he said he looked like our best QB (based on the games he had seen and the dual team practice in Napa).

As long as Davis has time to learn the playbook, which should take a year or two...he'll be competing for the starting QB spot at some point. I don't think having an optimistic perspective on one of our young players is riding their jocks...I'm jus pulling for the kid...it's up to him to make it happen.

That sucks, they should have released Alex Smith. Huard is a better backup then Alex.

I agree. Alex is one of the worst QB's in the entire league, bar none. The 49ers now have the most pathetic set of QB's ever unleashed on an NFL season. Good luck, we're gonna need it. Go ahead, call me what you want (Speaking to the alex apologists) but I am not wavering on my stance. Alex Smith SUCKS and unfortunately he is here to stay this year. If we have to rely on him, chalk it up as a loss.

If we don't get a solid, legitimate QB next year than we Scotty the GM should be replaced. 6-7 games this year?? Maybe. Don't count on winning the division or even getting close to it. If we had someone like Warner or Hasslebeck, maybe. But Hill and Smith...LOL

I believe that distinction belongs to the 2004 squad

I'll always remember that Chicago game

Yeah I have to agree, 818 is just a mad Smith hater and now that it looks as if Hill is going to struggle, he is jumping ship. No way the crop of QB's we have now is anywhere near as bad as the 04 ones. I find it funny how these internet GM's think they are smarter than the people that get paid to make the decisions. It makes one wonder what color the sky is in their world. Hooray for ignorance and hyperbole!

Smith hater what a joke. If hating a QB that sucks as opposed to having blind faith is being a hater than I am a HATER!!! They are keeping Smith so Scotty can save face. He still believes Smith can contribute though after 5 years of trying it is clear that he cannot. I still don't understand why I could be labeled as a hater just because I have no confidence in his ability to lead this team.

i personally have no love for alex smith as well and wish he was the one who woulda got cut. but i think it was a move for the long term. saying that i personally think we kept him so we could move him later this season or next season as in for trade value(i dunno who would wanna pick him up??? maybe NOLAN? haha) anyways. since broncos are having problems under center i'd send them alex smith, and a first rounder for brandon marshall! that would fix their problems... and it would give us a probowler!

Dude, you are insane if you want Marshall, that guy is TO 2.0, a known cancer to his team and by no means a team player, that would be the dumbest move ever.

Let's be straight about one thing, 30 starts and 32 games total is hardly 5 years worth.

But...but....if he can make people believe his vitriolic hyperbole, then maybe he can convince someone that the smart football people, the ones that know enough to get paid for their job, somehow know less than him. The team is keeping Smith around because he realizes that the potential is still there and that it wasn't developed properly by the former coaching staff. Is he right...who really knows? But the idea that a GM would risk his job by keeping someone that is hopeless around is as ignorant as it sounds.
Thats the best QB news Ive heard since the retirement of Trent "Dillweed". GO Nate Davis!!!! I bet he makes alot of teams regret that they didnt draft him because of his learning disability.

This guy is gonna be great when he gets his chance to learn the offense. I think he should learn the offense during the season & should get a chance to try for the starting role next season.
