What pisses me off is that Alex supporters will say s**t like, " oh we just want the best QB to be on the field and we wouldn't care if its Hill or Smith as the starter".

Then its the same people who never give credit to Hill for his wins and good play.

They say that hill never beat any good teams. Ok, so did Smith beat any good teams? the answer is no.

Wow, on one hand you complain about people not supporting anyone who wears a 49er uniform( smith), then you completely dismiss Hills 18 tds 9ints compared to Smiths 19 tds and 31 ints.

but but but but Smith played on bad teams and Hill had.......exactly, Hill had a bunch of rooks/2nd year players, and an ancient isaac bruce. and don't forget crazy ass martz and the 7 step drop.

Lets just say that Hill did have an amazing team that he played on... Is that still a good reason to say that smith is a better player?

No, im not saying that Smith can't be good, but as of now he sucks balls, injury or not, cuz when he was healthy, he also sucked balls, too.

So you ASSUME that I am a Smith guy because I am right on point with that stance?

Look, I am what I am and that is fair to midlan on this issue.

But I will compare Hill to drugs to an addict. After that first high it will NEVER get any better. Hill being the drug and you being the addict. You will sit and wait for Hill to take effect only to be disappointed and left wanting more.

While I on the other hand will be happy in the knowledge that I said no to drugs.

I already know that Hill will be the Starter barring a complete breakdown in upper management. But the difference between the Hill addicts and me is that I do want competition at EVERY spot including QB. Competition makes for a better team. And if Smith just happens to get better and PLAY better when given the opportunity then it's a Win/Win situation for all concerned. Right?

Or do you LIKE 9er players to fail?

~Ceadder

So you will blindly support Smith just because he has more "potential". Well obviously he has more potential, more talent, more upside, because thats why he was taken as the number 1 pick!!!!

But Hill, on the other hand, has produced, has shown that he can win, no matter what the circumstances.

now you will argue that he didn't look perfect, his arm is weak, Smith has more upside all that BS, blah blah blah.

But why do you play this game? To win every f**king time you go out there!

Smith might have the more upside, but Hill has "it". And if you don't know what 'it" is, it is having that will to win the game when it is on the line. To rally your team back when you're down in the 4th quarter. To take control of the huddle and lead your team to victory.

Now don't get me wrong, Hill ain't no Joe Montana. And I'm also not saying that its just his leadership skills that prove him as the better player....You see him with his accuracy, and mobility, pocket presence, and all the other things that SMITH JUST DOESN'T HAVE.

Did you not watch the first Arizona game in 07?Smith did exactly that, despite the dropped TD pass that was perfectly thrown to D-Drop.You guys act like Smith has never shown any hint of reaching his potential, which is complete bull.If Hill is such a sure thing, why is there even a QB competition going on?You think Singletary wouldn't have named him the starter already if it were as clear cut as you seem to think it is?Hill is pretty good and has done well for what he is,but the best thing for this team would be to have Smith become what we need,a franchise QB.Not saying that is a sure thing to happen by any means,I am not a blind supporter of anything except for the team, but for you guys to think that Smith will never be any better than he has been to date is just ludicrous.

Smith has made some plays in his career, I won't deny that....

But its not that big of a deal since he was NUMBER 1 pick!!! Of course he has to make some plays! Not trying to take that one comeback away from him, but Hill has done it more than Smith in less games.

And the reason there is a competetion is because obviously the organization doesn't want to come and basically say, " yeah guys, we f**ked up on that first pick 4 years back. We're releasing Smith and naming Hill the starter".

They resigned him because they would've lost more money if they released him. And obviously, they haven't completely given up on him. He has his last chance this year.

Don't give me that crap, " oh it would be better for Smith to be the franchise QB than to have Hill start since he was already reached his cieling of potential".

Well, honestly, I would rather have Hill play the way he has in his 10 games and win games for us, than to keep waiting for Smith to become the QB he "should" become.
Hill is a great option for the current offense. He reads and delivers quickly...thats what its about
I guess I have to make the obligatory statement that I'm more comfortable with the idea of Hill starting right now. But, there's a reason why they are still looking at Smith and it's not that they want to save face. Say what you want about him and his record speaks for itself, but, as Norv Turner said, he can make every throw an NFL QB has to make, he's big and tall, and he's fast. He's also smart and tough. He hasn't been developed correctly and everyone in the NFL agrees with that. So, as far as I'm concerned, more power to him. He seems like he could salvage his career right here on the Niners and if he's going to be a good QB, I want it to be here.
I wish smith well, it just that we need to win not develop a qb, he needs to get better at readin and delivering quickly....5 seconds tops in nfl and smith seems to need 7+ to deliver...agian, wish him well but hili, plan and simple wins, not pretty but thats what counts not the almosts or could be

I AGREE 100 %.

You basically summed it all up for me.

The team, along with the majority of the fans, is looking to win NOW. JHill can do that. Smith can't. We can keep him on the roster for the next two years. if he plays well and wins the job, so be it, and I will root for him. if he doesn't, get his ass out of here.

We can't keep being optimistic and saying great things about Smith, when he hasn't done jacks**t, and has only failed in his career.

Hill is the winner, and if you really think that this is his "hightest potential" and this is the best he can do, then this is what i want.

his "best" shows that he can win games, while you guys can keep waiting for Smith's "best".

Crabtree can only help Hill and/or Smith.

Regarding the ongoing Smith v. Hill debate, Hill has a much more natural mental grasp but his physical skills limit what he can do. Smith has the whole physical package (assuming that shoulder is good) but is more mechanical in his mental makeup.

A comparison of Smith to Manning may not be totally inaccurate in that Manning seems to be the type of player who would not be near as successful with different coordinators each year. He's able to operate within the same system and definitely lacks the improvisation ability of Roethlisberger, Thigpen, and once upon a time Favre. Smith lacks confidence above all.

That being said, Hill is probably the best choice to start the season but Smith has the possibility of being the best long-term answer that is currently on the roster.

Half of Alex's cure got fired midway last season and it seem to work wonders for the other 52 players on the team, so until I see the kid play without that jackazz around I will not call him a bust..
Why so Alex can throw a pass 5 yards behind him and get him hung up and injured?? PPPPlllllllleeeeeaaaaaassssseeeeeee...let training camp begin :)

Why does it make a Niner fan angry if another Niner fan supports a given Niner player? Just wondering.

What I see going on here is Niner fans getting angry when another Niner fan is making excuses for Alex Smith's failures.

No cure? Aeu contraire.

The cure is putting a brick wall OLine in front of him. Protection is and has ALWAYS been key.

Yet Shaun Hill seems to get it done without that brick wall O-Line you speak of. What if Hill had a brick wall O-Line?

I see something you don't. I saw it in training camp '07 the year after he played pretty well. His throws were accurate and had velocity like Manning. He's been injured since, so naysayers have a lot of negative ammunition. If he doesn't make good on his potential given honest playing time on the field, then I can accept that he isn't what I thought he was. Until then, as I initially stated, I believe that Michael Crabtree and the new weapons on offense will give Alex a new lease on his career.

I don't doubt that Shaun Hill will do a good job, but I think he might give defenses an opportunity to stack the box against the run. I am all for whoever gives us the best chance to win. I have reservations about Alex's command of the offense. He can definitely make the passes when healthy. I think his shoulder has been what's holding him back from gunning it. It's possible that his time out of commission has given him a chance to pick up a lot of mental recognition and resolve. But we won't know for sure until TC in a few weeks.
