What about just reducing the number of players on each side from 11 to 6?
6 on 6 = more room to maneuver = less chance of a violent hit.
And only kickoffs at beginning of game, half time, and only after FIELD GOALS. If you score a TD the other team automatically starts on their own 20.

Stupid Idea to limit kick offs, and increase scoring

As long as they keep the kickoff in the game, that's the biggest thing for me. Do whatever you need to do to keep it there. I'm fine with making it safer. It is what it is. Players are bigger and faster than ever before so I understand why, even if it's frustrating to watch sometimes the flags flying on offense and defense.

Basically turned the kickoff into a more punt like play.
Still gonna be a penalty on every kickoff return. lol
All those sound like good ideas. The rule changes will probably keep kickoffs around for awhile, and then if they don't help, the NFL will look for other changes. Football fans are by and large more conservative than most sports fans - they hate to see any change to the game - so the NFL will no doubt do what they can to keep kickoffs, if they can limit the injuries.
I actually like the 4th and 15 idea. Punts are more interesting to me than kickoffs, anyhow. The onside kick would just be replaced by going for it on fourth down.

I don't think they are touching the onside kick. Instead of overloading one side of the field (6 on one side, 4 on the other), the team attempting the onside has to obey the new rule of putting 5 guys on each half of the field.

I like the new rules for that same reason - it makes the kickoff more like a punt.
90% of kickoffs are just more time to fix a sandwich. Either the ball sails through the end zone or the returner is tackled inside the 20 which makes the choice to attempt to return is seem stupid. At least now, if the ball doesn't go through the end zone, there will be more room for the returner to do some work.

Can't do that as long as onside kicks are still needed.
So, if you are down 12 points in the fourth and score a TD/PAT with :50 remaining. You are now down 5, but the other team simply gets to have the ball at the 20 and just run out the clock?
A big NOPE to that.

Understood but f**k the onside kick. One of the biggest cop-outs in team sports

The onside kick keeps fans watching in the last 5 mins of the 4th quarter when their team is down 9-16 points. Eliminate it and game endings become boring exercises unless a team is within 8 points.
